Who here can read music?

I'm learning how to play piano (keyboard) at the moment because it's something i've always wanted to do. Play properly instead of just playing leads with a small as midi keyboard. The reading of music is a real obstacle though. I haven't touched the MP in a while.

Is there any peeps here that can read music?

yeah I can but not as well as I would like. I still need to look at it a bit sometimes, though I can actually sing simple melodies from a sheet of music, as I recognize the notes and have good ear for pitch which helps.
It takes a while, keep at it.
Make sure you know your keys and relative scales to, as this helps to.

Yep....although I'm better rhythms' than notes (played drums in middle/high school). I can read notes, but mainly if I know the scale of the key it's in, I can play stuff on the piano by following bar spacing or at least figure it out pretty quickly. Keep at it.....learn your keys/scales, and you'll be good to go.

I used to. I was taught to read music in 9th grade and it was pretty easy. Now I look at some sheets and its like 3rd grade reading ability. "This is C... ummm G... uh A... yeah G#.." Then when I play it, its some reversed version of Purple Haze when its suppose to be Yesterday.

Easy if I'm reading it to play recorder.

I've associated symbols on the page more with muscle memory of the fingerings and articulation of playing the instrument. So it's directly from the page to playing the instrument, no thinking about what notes I'm playing in between.

So it's harder for me to read it as the notes, or for playing on a keyboard.
Also, it's harder for me to play a note on the recorder given the name of a note.

Reading music can be a good thing, but I mean man, it's been so long. I read music when I was in 6th and 7th grade playing clarinet. It was easy because it was like having my music teacher hold my hand through the course, but now if I were to look at a note, I would question my sanity. Tuning this guitar I bought, I was like "Ok, so these are the notes the strings are supposed to be... Ok I think that note is like 2 notes away.... Nah"
