yes, using the eq.
you can 'automate' in that you can modulate it with an lfo.
but not traditional automation nor a traditional filter like you are thinking of in daw terms.
Not hard at all to do a high pass on the EB.
I guess people forget that the EQ in the EB is just filters and part the reason they don't work they way people want them to is because they are setup like filters.

yepp no need to fake a highpass because it IS a highpass
(and a Lowpass and also 2 bandpass with variable width)
To be honst it's not the usual Lo or highpass cause they doesn't include the complete frequency-range Highpass goes from 500Hz upward to 16k and Lopass goes from 500Hz down to 16Hz but they both sound like first order filter. For better results you can use one the of the mid bands and decrease the width to something like 10 and set it to 80Hz (faked lopass with midband filter) or 6k3 with a width of something like 25 for a "fake" highpass
