does anyone know how to do this kick cutout thing like in these? i really like the sound in it.

https://soundcloud.com/raahta/i-love-you

idk theres a lot more better examples but im forgetting and i dont know why, i know if anyone here has listened to knxwledge they'd know what im talking about.

its kind of like the kick drowns the sound out and goes through a low pass for a quick second also and its like oddly placed or something.

oddly placed kick drums: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etCbcw-qsVY
____________

another couple thing does anyone know how to do snare rolls or like high hats such as this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSJbM5HLQ24 and this

i want a kind of off time sound but i dont want it to be horrible you think i should just turn off the quantize?

i know sound hella amateur and i am to the mpc but not really to production

btw i use the mpc 2500

I didn't check your links as I don't wish to interrupt the music playing in my ears at the minute (Tribe) but for snare rolls people use note repeat combined with pitch/tune.

YouTube got tutorials dedicated to snare rolls.

not like those ones, like the 90s boom bap type ones.

1 side chain compression or ducking for the first one. the sample and/or bass has a compress on it. But the kick drum decides when the compressor works...
Can't do this with any mpc by itself.. Except by manually doing it.. by duckng the volume of the main sample everytime the kick and/or snare hits.. via qlink..
Or you could purchase something like a really nice compressor which has a sidechain/or key input..

2 oddly placed is just either them pr0gramming it like that or not using quantize.. Thy mite of played the pads in live or nudged certain kik drums so they landed late..

3 Those hihats sound like they are just in 32nd notes.. You can use note repeat and hold the pad down for this.. Making sure the time correct is set to 32 ..

ok thanks dude, i've been wondering what that compression effect was for a long time, you are big help but do you think those hats in uncle al were two different hats, the same one, or was alchemist using 16 levels on the mpc 2500 (which he does use)? i just like that because it sounds really organic rather than holding down note repeat and even if i play note repeat or play that i wont get the same result.

hat patterns have been baffling me lately as im trying to put more flavor in them but i end up doing the same ones, also like these hats have been tripping me out too.

you know im talking about the hats on the first part of the beat, not where it changes to the 808 right? shouldve been more specific.

@PillsInfinity

How I break down the sounds within one of the beats you listed.

Here's away not saying he or she used this method

1. Find a Kick 909 or 808 short filtered it. Kick sounds stands out because the producer may have choose that to be the primary focal point of beat within the mix.

2.The snare sounds as if it was sampled or chopped with a hi hat tail attached. Sounds like the snare may have a delay on it giving it that gallop fx.
Also listen throughout the beat a cutoff filter sweeps at times cutting off the attack on the snare hit at times within the beat.

3.The shaker keeps everything glued together in the beat. It doesn't appear to be cutoff by the filter only muted.

4.The sample and synth pad has fx's automated or recorded manually with cutoff filter that is sweeping from highs to mids or vice versa throughout the beat.

5.The bass appears to be untouched by the filter cutoff fx's.

As for what I hear on your hi hats question in the other beats that I reviewed:

Velocity will work with the right hi hat. You have to sample the hi hat with air in order the have a loose feel. Tweak the decay if it's to loose.

I would chop more than one sampled open hi hat from the same drum sample then play them with velocity off and time correction off to get a natural dynamic feel.

The hi hat grooves in the beats you listed to me sounds like just chopped drum break loops and not recorded by individual sampled loops played manually.

Good Luck hope this helps!

It's not necessarily a compressor sidechain that he is using. He could be using a gate like the Drawmer ds201 which gives you more sound-shaping options such as attack, decay, release of the gate or duck. No idea what a software alternative would be, but there will be one.

He is ducking all the other sounds in his track with the kick and snare. Too heavily done for my liking and a pet peeve of mine when people overdo it like that without much style to it.

Ha no I didn't realise you were talking about those, but JBM's advice seems right on that tip.

You can also turn up the A(attack) value in PARAMS
