Being around the wrong people

Step back and look at things differently.
A beat maker makes beats a producer makes songs happen.
You have to be able to look at a cat and know his true level and inspire him to get there.
If he really is garbage then make the track so hot that it either covers him or makes them work harder cause they really want to be on that sh*t.
If they don't step their game up then it's just a classic instrumental that gets you more work.
Your goal is to try and inspire a person to get to the next, you can't force them or just talk them into it, they have to want it.
Every wannabe MC out there it hot in his own mind and has an ego, so you don't want to get caught up in that, but never forget that it's there.

MaTT your biggest problem is that he is your brother. If he was just some dude you could deal with it a lot easier. Since you haven't gotten to the point where people are shopping your production yet, why not hunt for a MC with some skills?
It would give you something better to work with and maybe make him step up his game.
Would also prevent you from just dumping him and making bad blood.


Last thing everybody should remember to always have their game on point before you point fingers.

You find characters in all the hoods who profess to have skills but
the end result is wack they come looking for a freebie and
always have bread to buy some weed and liqour but they cant
pay for a session.

I dont deal in devevloping the artist the artist I deal with has to
have skills
I wouldnt put a wack M'C on my beats it would ruin my career
this is not a business where there is alot of room for mistakes
I deal with veterans others may have a different viewpoint
but mines are real and valid and I learned from experience


And check this out if they come and want something for nothing
just start hitting wrong keys and off notes until they leave
thats what I did the other day some cat I had a rift with
a few years back had the nerve to come in my crib trying
to tell me how to make a beat so they could spit on I just
laughed to myself because this was a cat that I was negotiating
a record deal for and the cat kept going up to the label and

I told him not to do that so he in turn called my crib and
started mouthing of to me talking about what he was going to
do I told him he wasnt going to do jack so he told me I cant do
any business for him this was in 1999 but he was in my crib just
the other day tryin to get me to make a beat for him

the nerve of some people and just think I was trying to get
this cat a deal and almost got it until the label found out him
and I had beef it ended up the label was illegitimate anyway


But I say this to say stay away from cats that dont mesh
with you on a spritual level they will spoil your creativity
only deal with people that are serious.

A producer doesn't really need to develope an artist, but they still need to make an artist be on their "A" game.
Lot of hot tracks have been wasted on established artist just because no one in the studio said nah, do that sh*t again.

Then Matt, it's all about the hunt. You will need to do some serious searching. I'm assuming you know Philly, like I know Philly....or you maybe even know it better....Lots of cats who can rap. Not many who can can show up on time, ready to work and who have wit, intelligence, fire and a couple dollars to pay some of them damn bills that you create as a result of working with their azz.

Take your time. Look around and git a round. Your partner is out there.
And don't diss your brutha in the process. I met Nas when he was about 10 years old at his Pop's Okra Orkestra concert. Who knew????

I have pondered the thought a thousand times over and it still
hasent gotten me anywhere but reality sets in real quick and
it says me and my Fam gotta eat my street credibility as far
as making beats and engineering skills is through the roof
right now so I know I'm good in that regard.

But some cats just dont get it thats why I deal with them
with a long handled spoon cause I mean business and
Iam about business no games see cats got game with
them son you know the kind that thinks they are slick
and you're not.

finding people who are serious as you is hard to come by. everyone says they can rhyme. but when it is time for them to step up to the plate and do things,they never deliver. i wasted a lot of time on people who said that they are serious. i worked with a couple of people,wasted studio time,money,etc..sometimes i wanted to give up,but deep down i want this so bad. this is my love. in order to get ahead in life you have to get rid of the negative in your life! that goes for anything in life,people, bad habits. i would like to have gone more in detail because i have a story to tell, but it is too long. good luck!

called Brutha LD they aired it on Rutgers Univ. Radio you know
anything about that.

On the real though I have met htis one dude who has got skills out the a$$, but him havin no car makes it a big issue to hook up our schedules and get some sh*t poppin... And I'm still tryin to gte my name around by givin some beat CDs to Chief Kamachi and Outerspace.... I gave Kamchi one and he told me that he liked one beat a lot, but I need to step up my game a little bit more, so he wants to hear more... I have stepped my game up and now I'm tryin to hand out some beat CDs to get some exposure...

This is what I as sayin... It's definitely a tocuhy subject cause he's my brother... But I'm gonna continue to work at it and if it doesn't work out I might have to tell him to look around for other beats... I mean we could always get down on a track or two, but it doesn't seem to be workin out for a whole album worth of tracks...

matt your lucky in that he is lazy as it will be easier to stop working with him..rather than letting it get political why not stop asking him for contributions, keep doing your beats and vox (if you mc that is) and dont write anything that requires his input...

if you do this for long enough he naturally either completely stop due to inactivity or get bitten by the bug again and then come to you, rather than you going to him- this means you can carry on unhampered and dont have to stress about dropping him cos if you just get on with it and he just lazes around he'll kind of drop himself if you know what i mean....- used to have the same probelem with a drummer i used to rely on...i stopped phoning him for a jam which gave him to time to miss doing it and he started phoning back with renewed musical vigour...
