If you are a novice like me. I have a few words of advice for my peers.
1. Check out the manuals of older MPC models especially the Roger Linn 60 and 3000 series. They are more straightforward in explaining each function in depth for the regular guy, the latter models like the MPC 2000 on up can be too technical.
2. Check out great books like (Loops and Grooves The Musicians Guide to Groove Machines and Loop Sequencers) and (How to DJ Right) and (Sampling Basics )at Amazon.com. These books cover the basics for DJ music which is pretty much what we all are after.
3. Listen to your favorite programmer, beatmaker over and over to work out each monophonic part in the song.
4. Check out the Source Mag int the producer section each month for articles of producers and their methods.
5. Ask the experience producers lots of questions because every great producer learned something from someone.
6. Call up your local Akai representative for questions they can be really cool sometimes with feedback.
7. Finally, in the beginning you learn that you will learn alot, but later when you improve and review again and again you will gradually understand that knowledge and understanding is two different things. I may know what shift timing is from the manual, but I lack the understanding on how to use it in my programming. Watching someone else or tips is far better way of understanding.
Sorry I wrote a looong list but, I asked and received before so I`m giving back my 2 cents worth to the one that will come after me.
Oh yeah, check out for a website that Snoop Dogg had up on making beats on the 3000. I forgot the address, but it had some great tips on if your beats are fire or not.
