Real time or step sequence?

Do you do your drum beats Real time or step sequence?

I'm used to step sequencing my drums in software. I usually do it this way so I put each drum on a seperate track.
Plus I have a hard time keeping my rythym on those small pafs for more than a couple bars.
How do you guys do it?

Real time, i reckon thats one of the beauty's of the mpc over software.. get that butt movin & tap those pads..

your not restricted in real-time. specialy when u change the grid size.

I guess what I'm really asking is do you guys program one drum at a time or do you play it like a drum kit?

well it depends how skilled you are

some of us only play like two elements at a time (like say kick & snare) and then add hi hats and all that percussions

then you got the guys who are or used to be drummers and generally can play all these pads together

it s like playing piano, at the beginning you play with one finger, then two, then ...

Do both do some real time playing then go back and sprinkle in some step edit to get some dope patterns.

Step seq for me is for editing tight parts of your drums etc


if you have trouble getting your drums to be tight just put on the quantize function at perhaps 1/8 then the mpc corrects your notes so they get tight.

other tip is to double your tempo, let say if you have 90 bpm then turn it up to 180 so you hear the metronome tap at each note.
