I like this thread! So let me share my two cents, or pence, etc.. depending on where ya from..
Hip-hop is almost dead. Most of the rappers that are just getting on the scene are too young to remember what real hip-hop was like. A 20 year old's first knowledge of hip-hop doesn't know anything about the cold crush brothers, D.S.T, Spoonie G, Busy Bee, etc. They think and believe Tupac and biggie are hip-hop. They see 'gangsta's' like old school cats see b-boys. Most think they are gangsta's because they smoke weed like Snoop. They don't know the difference between a gangster (al capone) and a gang-banger (street punk). I don't understand why anyone that doesn't live in a third world country has it so bad. There are programs from underage non-graduates to get job skills that cost nothing. Young women can get free food and cheap shelter for their kids. We have low cost medication, and free clothes that are given away, but yet, they feel the need to sell dope so they can be like the rappers that are not living that life. Everyone wants to brag about how hard life is.. that's their excuse. I can understand if most of these guys drank from the same water the goats pissed in. I can understand if there were NO jobs available, but most people feel like their too good to take a Mc Donalds job. It's just a stepping stone..get the job, and look for a better one while your working. I had to mention that to get to my point....
When you have a generation that is raised on TV/Radio, they end up doing what they see/hear. They don't want anything different from what they already know. Gangsta rap is almost 20 years old, but it's easy to make, and it''s negative... and who doesn't like negativity? It's on the news everyday. We all like a good story about how such and such is broke. Negativity=good. Different=bad. Why? because this new generation only knows negative. Sure, they hear roots, common, slum v, etc every blue moon, but 50 cent is in rotation 6 times every hour on every radio station. Lil john wants folks to tear the club up, and the radio plays it more. Black eye peas wants more love, and they play it less.
This is exactly why I do things differntly. I hope most of you enjoy my work, but honestly, I could give a sh!t less, and you should feel the same way too. Don't create music to make me happy.. make YOU happy. Create your own and constantly improve on self. That is hip-hop. Don't wear a doo-rag and a cap just because you seen it on a video and don't emulate another producer just because his sound is pleasing to peoples ears.. If your trying to be him, then who are you? Ask yourself that. (I don't mean that to you directly.. you know what I mean).
