technique

when u guys make beats do you just do a rough draft with all of the sounds you need and then just go back to it when youneed a beat or do u just bang the whole thing out and record it? Cuz im not good yet at making the whole song. so i just have a bunch of 2-4 bar rough drafts. if u guys do make a whole song what are some good tips to make it sound good through out the whole thing and not sound too dull.

At first it was normal for me to just make 2-4 bar beats also, but I would suggest to begin composing full songs as soon as possible cause if you are thinkin about doing it as more than a hobby people are gonna wanna hear full compositions. Plus you'll be able to take MPC to its limits and in the process be able to practice...seeing what tech. you like to use.

As far as tips, I think an important thing so tracks don't get dull is to vary the drum and snare patterns. Take one out here, add an extra there, add a bar w/ no kicks...etc.
What I like to do is if I sampled a 1 bar piano riff/melody and put it on track 1...I see how many different patterns I can come up with (that fit of course) using tracks 2 thru whatever. Then I only keep those that really keep track moving.

I don't necessary make rough drafts; When I'm "vibing", I just go with the flow of the vibe. If I feel it's complete, it's a wrap. Otherwise, I work as long as I'm flowin' with it then I'll stop and work on something else and go back and finish that beat/track at a later time. I don't try to force it. That works well for me.

I'm always making rough cuts, and I record all of my practice sessions.

learn EVERYTHING you can about the machine so you know exactly WHAT you can do...(and it IZ a whole LOT of sh*t u can do)...
Read tha manual... ask... listen... love tha musik(listen to othas u feelin/don't COPY though.) Study drum patterns.. sample chops.. what sounds better looped or chopped(DEPENDS On PREFERENCE, i guess),
just do tha sh*t passionatly, you'll get better alot faster if you surround yourself with goodsh*t too...(again, preference.) 2 bar, 4 bar, 100 bar,
JUST MAKE GOOD MUSIK. learn tha technical shit 150% so you can express yourself musically 2 tha FULLEST of your ability...

I always record my sessions to minidisc so I can pick up on what i'm doing especially if I make one of those priceless mistakes......
