low end theory?

can somebody help me with this low end theory business, when i low pass filter it just sounds like the same thing but muffled as if a car is driving by with a loud ass sound system, it don't really sound like a bassline to me, i tried different frequencies and resonance, but just can't get it nice, and when i play it along side crispy tight drums its like a duck talking to a chicken.

try a freq around 8-12 and crank the res up. not to much though or it distort the sample. you might have to set the 2nd filter to link to get the sound you're lookin for.

see the prob with just using the mpc is that after u filter there is no eq or gain so u cant get it thumping. A way to get around that is to run the turntable thru a dj mixer and take 2 recordings of the same sample. One at normal levels, the other with the bass emphized on a dj mixer and with the volume raised. So when u filter it will be nice and loud with a lot of bass present.

8 out board.....send bass to another channel (DAW or analog mixer) then filter or eQ accordingly......now you have two bass levels to manipulate, one from the stereo bus on the MPc and another from the 8 out send

I don't know what you have, but on the 1k and 4k, just get it low and use the EQ's and then add some distortion. That will bring the bass out.

maybe the sample you are using just aint good enough

you can't make a nice bass out of just any old sample..

Maybe you can....but there is a difference between a nice smooth bass sound and one that sounds like a vegetarians fart.

You're right, there is a difference. But which is better? It all depends on the sound you're going for and/or the track that it's gonna be on. If you have a preconcieved notion about what bass (or any sound/instrument, for that matter) is "supposed" to sound like, then you're just limiting yourself and your music. I got all sorts of bass lines. Some are smooth, some are fuzzy, some are crunchier than Shaq's favorite candy bar. Point is, you gotta experiment with your samples. Maybe a bassline sounds like poop when its all alone, but it might match up nice with some other out-there samples. And that being said, I can make a nice bass line out of anything, using the low end theory (or a diff. process I like to call microlooping)
