Discuss the various methods you use in music production, from compressor settings to equipment type.

I can't seem to find a solution to my problem.

I know that what I want goes against the nature of an MPC. It is designed for sequencing. Nevertheless, I want to know if this is possible :)

I want:
- to use the MPC1000 as a midi controller
- to use the MPC1000 as a sound module / stand alone sampler
- to use Cubase SX3 as a master to record and play sequences

It seems this isn't possible. I can slave the MPC with no problem to SX. The problem is hitting the pads. The pads send midi messages to SX. But SX echoes these back to the MPC when the midi thru setting in SX = enabled. These echoed messages are played again by the MPC, and in turn again sent to SX. In short: a midi feedback loop. This locks up the entire MPC.

The only option I know of is disabling the midi tru setting SX. This way SX won't echo the pads I hit back to the MPC. But I *need* the midi thru setting in SX enabled, because otherwise my other midi equipment won't respond anymore to my master keyboard.

Some synths and keyboards have a setting named 'local off' to fix this, but the MPC doesn't seem to have this.

Does anyone know how I can fix / work around this?

TIA

For the record: the new OS 2.0 will get a 'local off' option, which fixes my problem :)

Sounds to me like you want a fully fledged, Pro sequencer like Ableton Live :-) This sort of stuff is very easy to configure in Live..

Okay, not a particularly useful post but just like demonstrating where Live is as good/better then the competition as Live is sometimes dismissed as being a little on the mature side..

Good luck with your issue dude. Hopefully someone can give you a cool solution..

could you not disable the midi thru in the mpc ?
or use out A for your external gear, out B to go back to SX (nto sure why you need this though)

and have the thru only for out A (i think it is possible but not 100% sure)

i don't know. you don't have to use the midi thru on the mpc.

@punkdISCO: I'll consider using Live when the new OS isn't out this newyear ;)

@truvc: midi thru on the mpc? I'm not using it (soft thru=off). All other external gear is attached to SX, I don't want the MPC to control my other gear.

Thanks people, but it seems I'll just have to wait for the new OS.

I use an 8x8 MOTU AV MIDI timepiece.....never had any of those isses....and yes, I do use Cubase SX (just upgraded to 3) almost exclusively.

@Knoxximus: could you please try this in SX?:

- Make a new midi track with midi input = MPC and midi output = MPC
- Set the midi channel of the MPC to the same as that midi track
- MPC: soft thru = OFF
- Hit a pad

My experience:
- When MPC's soft thru = ON and SX's midi thru = ON you should get a midi feedback loop, that's why I told to turn the MPC's soft thru off
- when SX's midi thru is off you'll hear the pad 1 time
- when SX's midi thru is on you'll hear the pad 2 times very short after each other (sometimes it's more like a flanging thing)

So it works correctly if I turn SX's midi thru off, but this should be on if you have a master keyboard attached to SX (not MPC) and you want to use that to play VSTi's or other outboard gear.

See my problem? A local off option on the MPC will fix this. This is why so many keyboards have a local off feature.
