We all know the technique of sampling at 45 and then pitching the sample back down to normal (usually done on a SP1200 or a MPC60 because of their limited sample time.)
But, do any of you do that on a 3000/2000/XL just to get a different sound? It sounds basically like sampling at a lower rate, it grains it up a little.

A word to the wise. All distortion and grainyness isnt good. Some people have the idea that anything that degrades the sound quailty is "grimy or gritty" in a good way. Not true....

I agree.
What is your opinion on the grain that you get from sampling at 45 on a MPC? (That's really why I brought up this topic)

Definately the grain that you get from doing this on a SP is grimy in a really good way - in my opinion.

it makes the samples sparkle a little more, i think grimy/grain is the wrong word.

I have to agree with Jrides. Now if your sample has a lil bit of noise and everything else is clean than cool but if your whole track is "dirty"...NOT GOOD. Some cats don't really know what they are looking for they just want that vintage sound.

well depending on what kind of style of beats your doing,
some like me like the grime,while some like the clean,stereo sound.
there are a slew of artist famous for allowing the raw sound,
explain what it's so called wrong to have the "GRIMY SOUND"
if anything this is a hell of a topic and im surprised no ones really said anything constructive :idea:

Samplin high pitched samples was earlied used because to save space..if you sample a pitched up sample, the time between the start point and end point is shorter so thats saving space....so you can pitch it down on your sampler...

Its not changing your sound

But it does sound different than if you just sampled at normal speed...ESPECIALLY on a SP.

that right especially on the sp cause of the bit range,
but i mean reagardless of machine,take advantage of it anyway!

if you know anything about harmonics it stands to reason that a sampled sound even on a hit-bitrate-sampler will sound different when sampled high then pitched down to normal

see you arent just recording the source sound.... the process of recording itself leaves its own "fingerprint" on the sound... everything from the way a turntable stylus or microphone works to non-linear deviations from transistors/chips and signal noise in cables etc. thousands of variables to consider.

the simplest to explain though, is if you use this method (and its a good one) you still will be pitching down harmonics, to an INCREDIBLE degree if you are using a 24/96k capable sampler, and you will start the hear them the more you pitch down.


i pushed this theory to its limit recently recording insects at 192k and then going down.... wow.. its amazing the sounds that are out of human hearing range!

anyway, this effect will be very veyr profound on lower-bit-rate samplers because there is less of a discrete bit-range to use, making for more obvious and obtuse effects

harmonics is an amazing field of study.
