making jazzy drum and bass

aight i just got a mix from this kid i know and its all like jazzy drum and bass. Any tips or ideas to get started? What is the range of more chill dnb? like 140 to 190? Also the drums. Just take a loop and speed it up or program it different? I really have no idea bout this shit. Also what about instruments? Like nice chill spacy pads and lead synths? I get the concept of speeding the drums up and playing at half time with like keys or a pad. I just need some pointers to get me started.

I find asome jazzy DnB with some nice subs into. something really clean. Atleast thats what i like to use when makin some chilled DnB. And some clean programmed drum breaks. And like you mention you can the play the melodys at half if you wanted. I wouldn't go any lower 160 bpm (this is just my opinion), so somewhere between 160-175 bpm. I use to dabble with makin DnB (more of the dark, heavy, and faster stuff), but have opted to focus more on hip hop, or whatever genre you want to put my music in....... I know some others make DnB up in here.

uh?! ... you do this by practicing.. just like you did when you learned how to make hiphop beats... u could buy a few drum and bass albums, a few jazz albums, some nu jazz stuff. listen to it. repeat it

uh yeah i know this. I dont even know what to listen to though. What producers and the drum programming is on some dif shit. Im not a new jack yo, i just want some pointers and any tips to making the shit. Any artists i should listen too, etc... My hip hop beats are doing just fine, just want to dabble in some other shit for a minute.

ok my bad but you sounded like you could learn this overnight and doing jazzy dnb tomorrow morning.. which will not happen

haha, nah man ive been grinding on making hiphop/jazz for 4 years so i know the struggle. I dont expect to learn shit over night. Im just getting comfortable now with making the music i make, i just want to mess with other genres.

i have been removed from the scene for about 4-5 years now, so the sounds have changed considerably...but i used to love the more "atmospheric/jazzy/intelligent" side of jungle for their dedication to drum programming along with general musicality of the sound.

from what i understand, jungle started out with a lot of sped up breakbeat loops cut up and layered, but around 95-96, the producers got sick of all the amens and started making their own loops and breaks...then just get them all synced up tempo wise, and you should be able to mix it up pretty nicely.
i'm pretty sure most of the producers use DAW's for most of their sequencing. also, there's a metalheadz video that shows a lot of their studios and shows dillinja, lemon d, ed rush and optical makin some beats.

take some time to listen to some sht you like, and start buildin some libraries of loops and breaks at the right tempos (don't forget half-time, too)...older tricks used a lot of time stretch and compression, but you'll realize that you can't just speed up a regular funk loop. you'll need to remove some drum hits to give it some more swing.
