I've been making "crunk" dirty south beats, and the BPM I have to use to make them a similar tempo to a Lil Jon track is about 170 BPM. Yet whenever I hear people talking about making beats, they are talking about beats in the 85 to 100 range. Why is this? I use the default Time Sig of 4/4...I don't know if this has anything to do with it. But in order for me to get the hooks and verses long enough, I have to make 16 bar hooks and 32 bar verses, which is twice as long number wise, but time wise, my songs come out sounding right. I know this is because my songs are ticking by at twice the pace of anyone elses because of the 170 BPM, but they sound okay. But in order to do my snare rolls and rapid hi hats like a dirty south track has, I have to have a really high BPM. What am I doing wrong? Or is this tempo normal for a dirty south track?
