No Playback While Recording...

I am using Acid to record and mix everything after my beats are made. I save all my beats on my laptop as wav's and then have it layed out in Acid. I have a USB recording device from my mixer so I can record vocals onto my tracks using Acid. When I have the USB device plugged in the laptop to record, you can't hear anything out of the speakers or headphones of my laptop. It isn't just in Acid either, and it isn't the little box to check "playback while recording."

I just want to be able to have my laptop playback the track while I am recording vocals because otherwise, how am I supposed to know where the track is at to link up the vocals, unless I record everything through the mixer as one big wav, which would be really stupid...

Any thoughts???

Is your usb recording device full duplex? playback/record simultaneous?

What is it exactly? What are the specs on it?
Check your windows mixer?
Check your audio routing inside of acid?

The usb device is just a RCA to USB recorder, it came with software called "LP Recorder." I don't really know any specs on it, and the windows mixer settings don't do much. I can either choose my sound card or usb device and both play back and recording options - nothing is muted and it looks normal. Don't know much of the Acid settings, just know that the box is checked that says playback while recording, but that doesn't actually happen...

what soundcard is in your pc?

Can IT play/record same time?

Are your speakers hooked up to that pc soundcard?

soundcard and software have to be able to do that play/record thing.

I have an IBM Thinkpad T40, so whatever the default sound card that came with the laptop when I bought it a few years ago. I don't have it with me since I'm at work. But I think in the windows volume mixer, there was something like sound blaster or something corny sounding like that...
Not sure...I'll find out later tonight when I get home.

Sorry for being dumb about this. I think the name of my sound card is "SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio" I have a few other things listed under the sound controllers under my hardward, but it is just drivers and codecs. I'm not sure what all this means, or if I am capable of recording and playing back at the same time. If not, how would I be able to do that. Should I get a new sound card and isntall it? Is anyone able to record and playback at the same time? This situation sucks, but I appreciate everyone's help.

i've used Acid for laying vocals many times....its gotta be down to your soundcard

The default/stock soundcard is not full duplex, there will be no simultaneous play/record for you today guy.

Lame. So you think if I replace the soundcard, I should be able to do what I want. Looks like my next purchase is a soundcard. Any suggestions?

Suggestion, get a soundcard that is fullduplex.
ie.... Play/Record simultaneously.

That should solve your problem.

I deal with ibm thinkpad t40's alot here at the workplace. that's how I know.
