Well, if you use the SP1200, it doesn't have keygroups but is 12 bit.
If you use the ASR it does have keygroups but is NOT 12 bit.
It's all about what you are looknig for and needing. The ASR is a newer sampler and has more features then the S-950 but if you are looknig for 12 bit sound & keygroups, then the S-950 is a good option.
The Akai S-950 will give you 12 bit sound , but it will also give you "Keygroups" which were not available on the MPC series until the MPC 4000. This allows you to set up
samples in "Keygroups" or ranges on the keyboard. So that you can use a sample per key, or you for example you could take a sample a c1, c2, c3, c4 , & c5 and use keygroups to lay themout across the keyboard. The more samples that you include
in the keygroups, the more accurate the representation of the sample.
Also, the Akai S-950 allows the loading of samples while the current samples are being played. So that with the MPC 2000XL, so that if you are rocking the MPC 2000XL live, you can be loading samples on the S-950 for each song, without having to stop the sequencer.
But if you want MY opinion, the if you are looking for a 12bit sound, that does keygroups,
you should look at the Sequencital Circuits Prophet 2000 (keyboard) or 2002 (Rack).
Prophet 2000/2002 (though you might not hear about it as much from various hip hop producers) is able to load Akai S-950/S-900 floppies, but the Actual Filter that is included
with it is a hardware analog filter. So with that you are getting a 12bit sampler that plays keygroups and whose filter is analog.
But most people don't use it because it doesn't have the Hype....
Damn.. I wish more Sampler Hardware manufactures would include Analog filters. Would make people look at Soft Samplers and laugh....
I think since the Prophet 2000, the next Sampler that has included an Analog Filter is the
Radikal Technologies Spectralis which was just released this year, and it definitely has my attention.
That's over 10 years... too long ...
