If some one was to say they do this to their breaks, what would be the actual process they used, say on a computer???? mind the person is talking about the amen break in this case.......

Through gates then noise remover, then through inverse expander for a very loud kick and snare with a nice clean roll, gives you that Remarc sound

Through ring modulation and overdrive, then layered with a normal amen, to give you that dirty punchy amen sound

Filtering and parametric eq ( outboard )

so basically I am having trouble getting this particular break to the desired audio state.

If any one can help I would really apreciate it.

It is pretty much self explanatory, but I will try:
You run the Amen through a Noise Gate, the noise gate will only pass signal that rises above the noise gate threshhold. Any Minor noise or nuance will effectively be filtered out.

Than use Noise removal (Hiss and Crackle remover)

Inverse Expander - Ask someone else

Add Ring Modulation - effects processor, plug in or possibly a synthesizer

Overdrive - Basically forcing the signal above the analog clipping threshold and creating a certain brand of distortion. Use a tube amp, a good mixer to overdrive. A computer will give you a digital clip if you overdrive the sound. Fruity Loops has an overdrive plugin taht works okay.

Then you layer your **** up sample with the original (like using a send effect instead of direct line)

Filter and EQ to taste




I myself, would just **** with the sound until it sounds right to you. You may not get your drums to sound like his, but you know that no one elses drums will sound like yours. Oh yeah, you need something like Cooledit or cubase or anyting that has effects processing. Everytime, I try to follow someones recipe like that... I **** up anyway and end up with my own sound... so why not start creating my own sound from scratch.


You may want to learn a bit about the different effects to... it will help you in the long run.

I agree, I am all about having my own sound. But still when I work with the amen it sounds way to raw. I just need to figure out the proper way of processing this break. I think I need to find out what this inverse expander is all about. If any one can help that would be dope.

Classic drum break much loved by dnb producers everywhere...

Non-D&B fans would recognize the Amen break from being used on the song "Straight Outta Compton."

I always trip on the phenomenon of Amen Brother/D&B. I can't think of another genre that was basically born out of one particular break......well, maybe two.....Soul Pride was also pretty important to the genre.
I'm not really a D&B enthusiast, does anyone have any more insight on this?
