What I did one day was use the digital outs of a 2000 to go into a beat up mpc 3000. (The 3000 must be in sample mode). My impressions: The 3000 doesn't really have more bass than a 2000. What make it sound better is that its d/a converters sound cleaner (less digtal high end distortion) than the 2000's and therefore sounds a lot better when you crank it up.
My suggestions: There is probably no need to buy a 3000 because of the sound but I would invest in a ad/da converter box. Although I don't know for sure but I'll bet even a fairly cheap one ($250-500) will improve your sound. Another alternative is to sample digitally and track out digitally. I think the digi 001 has digital inputs/outputs.
