Evil chops

whats up fellow beatmakers
i'm wonderin if anybody can give me some advice on chopping, at times a sample will tell me how to chop it but at other times, i feel like i don't know what the f**** i'm doing,when it comes to chopping and i end up just looping ish up, i starting to get kind of frustrated because it i will make a hot a@@ beat then i won't make nothing for like a 2 months, i read all the articles on this site and searched the forums,i got all the the books, i mean i know my machine, i know the mpc quite well, it's just i don't have any technique, if any body can help me out greatly appreciated

practice makes perfect.
keep ya eyes on that trim screen, play around with it on a daily basis until you got it. it's gon come to you. im sure this aint what u wanted to hear, but this is what I suggest.

I have the same problem sometimes and when a chop is being evil I just use my ears instead of my eyes, sometimes that helps.

yeah just use the sound wave graphic to get you close to where you need to be. Then, use those ears and listen, dont look.

Choppin samples is not the only way to make music on an MPC.Do not think that to be great at using an MPC that you have to be good at choppin up breaks and stuff.Just focus on sampling single shot drum sounds and just making beats period,if you feel like you have to sample and chop then thats fine but first just focus on making beats.Personally I do not chop up breaks and stuff to make music.The reason I bought my first MPC was to be able to make beats.I liked the pads and the way the sequencer worked.Some people say "Buying Sounds is not true Hip-Hop" or"So and So would never buy sounds for his MPC".That may very well be true but you would be surprised how many producers buy the actual drum sounds for there MPC's.10-15 years ago there were not a whole lot of resources for buying sounds for diffrent samplers but that is not the case anymore there are at least a dozen good,reputable companys that sell good quality drum sounds.I would go that route for now so that you can focus on making music then if you hear a cool sample that you would like to use then so be it but at least your not letting a capable piece of equipment go to waste just because you can't figure out how to "Sample and Chop" like so and so.

What Earnest said is true with alot of producers. Alot of producers chop their own stuff but alot of them also buy them or use presets on keyboards and modules... some even use a combination of all 3. The Neptunes did Grinding with all triton presets.

It depends on what your chopping. So the best advice since you technicly know how the beast works is to practice daily unitl you get it right. Trust me take the time and youll be choppin shit in your head before you even sample the sound. That is what I do because I dont need a machine to tell me if chopin it is a good idea or not. I think you need practice pickin your sounds maby. Anyway good luck and holla back If you got any more qustions. when you chop shit up you can add some in the front, doesnt have to be pricise because you can always change your attack in program(params) mode!!!!!
