question bout breaks

hey whats up everyone.
i having been using one shots for drums, like a snr, bass drum and so on to make my beats since i got the mpc. this weekend however i was a little bored and didn't feel like cutting out snares and hi hats and such so i searched around some records and came across a pretty cool break. so i chopped up the break and used it instead. it sounded great , i added my own basslines and melody on top. do a lot of you guys do this? i kinda felt like i was cheating but screw it it sounded good.

yeah thats how i do mydrums anymore. You cut em up and play them back rhtymically. Recycle is dope for this. Also in step edit u can arrange/rearrange the breaks.

did you loop the break or chop the break?

honestly, either way it dont matter. i love chopping breaks because you can play them back in any order, layer the sounds and get mad origional with it. looping a break is cool, but i think that id only freak it for a few bars. i think my favorite thing to do is program the drums even though its the most tedious (next to naming tracks and sounds of course! boo) so looping a break wouldnt do it for me.

there are several breaks that have been looped 3gazillion times. if thats the case, then nah i think thats wack. if you found some OG shit, then 2 thumbs up. rock it proper

thanks for the input, it is not something i will do for every track but i just wanted to break away for a minute from chopping stuff into one hits. either way i find it pretty fun and fresh. but i do understand that it could be wack as sh*t if i was just using the same breaks that have been used over and over again. tryin not to do that for sure. anyway just thought i would throw this topinc into the pot so to speak.

latelly ill cut up a break and jiust play it back realtime for like 80 bars. No quantize. Then Ill have like a 3min long drum pattern with variations and shit.

yeah i can understand what u just said about playing a break for a while and then having like a breakdown with variations and what not. fun to do that. damn i just love those open drum breaks on records. just picked up this one 12" and it had a vocal acapella and a drum acapella! it is from like the early 70's or somethin. amazing.

dont worry about it- what you gotta remember is that the average listener is a not a producer so wont even think about how it was made...let alone care......and the music is for them right?

do what sounds cool to you....i don't use loops cos i wanna learn how to write my own but its horses for courses...

it does take some skill to replay a cut up break. You need to get the timing down pat. If you are off by a sec when replaying it your loop will be jacked. I have been usin recycle and that shit is the truth.

as long as its done in an original manner.

Think of it as an individual drum set. If you played the exact drum set with your own pattern, would it be cheating? no. .........here is why:

the reason we sample off records is because we cant get the original drum set, with the same acoustics, recordings, characteristic, to do our own patterns.

so we sample, just as if we bought the same guitar as jimi hendrix, we just do it in our own way.
