Compressors and equilizers are really just tools of the trade. Do you really need them in your beats? Thats just up to you. Forget about Dilla and Madlib, that sound's been forged. What'cha gonna do to craft your own sound is where your mind should be at.

have you guys noticed that like half of the new threads on this forum (the entire forum, not just this section) have been about J Dilla and/or Madlib??

I dunno, everyone went on a frenzy of postin shit about em.

To people askin about em...their shit sounds amazing because they are amazing producers and they flip samples like no one else and they know the ins-and-outs of all the gear they use. Compression and EQ only go so far, and there pretty universal effects, so its not like Dilla made his own compression or madlib made his own EQ. They start with great sounds, and thats why it sounds so good.

And as stated above, most compression and EQ is done during mixdowns or mastering, aside from just compressing drums to get certain sounds etc...And those stages of recording are probley not handled but Dilla or Madlib at all.

If Dilla or Madlib gave you the exact EQ or Comp settings they used on a certain track, then you went and applied the same settings to yours, it wouldnt sound the same at all, not even a little. You have to realize that there is no universal "amazing" setting or any effects, it all depends on what sound you start with, and what sounds you want to achieve in the end, and you can only do that by using your own settings for your own personal sounds, not someone elses settings for a completely different sample...that sh*t wouldn't make sense

I want my shit as fat as madlibs. What should I eat? And should I use the same toilette paper?? Does someone know what kind he use??

Dilla and Madlib threads sucks! But wait ......no no no. Premier, Pete Rock and Dre Threads suck too.

There are more than enogh threads to read about their stuff, how they work, what they use etc. Just READ and use scroogle (instead of "big brother" google)

one of the best albums in hip hop IMO.

When People pose these kinds of question the one thing that they are failing to realize is that Madlib & Dilla were more concerned about how the music felt than sounded. Lets take Punk Rock for instance, early on pretty much the whole genre was badly mixed. But that could'nt stop the translation of the raw energy and intent behind music. I doubt the punk audience at the time was standing around analyzing the quality of the recordings.
Let's be honest, does Madlib's mixes always sound good? JMO.
