DRUMROLLS

Ive nosed around a bit and searched topics on this site. This site has been extremely helpful for me in hooking my shit up, and got me recording. Its an invaluable tool.

Its my guess that most guys on here, are more so fans of like J dilla, that dude boondoc, 9th wonder....you know guys that have real sounding, unquantized tracks, guys that are really chopping up samples, and thats cool.

Me personally, im more a contemporary cat, I rock with Zaytoven, Drumma boy, Shawty Redd, the dudes that are holding down the sound of the south right now. And im sure you guys listen to the radio and youve heard the drumrolls they use in there beats. I really would like to know how they are doing that. And i know its more than just a note repeat from 1/16th to 1/32nd. Its deeper than that because ive been trying to recreate a good sounding 808 drum roll since i got my shit hooked up and i can only come close.

So does anyone know how to achieve this type of roll?

I don't know the southern groups you mention, but I do hear a lot of quantized 1/32 note 808 / 909 style rolls in the southern rap I do hear. Often combined with some pitch shifting. Do you know about the 16 levels/tuning function? Try a descending run across a few pads with your note repeat thing going and see if it's closer to what you want.

In a seperate note, I've also been interested in programming more naturalistic drum rolls and stick rolls on the MP and I've had some success by hooking up an Alesis ControlPad drum interface with MIDI and playing with sticks to program some of my rhythm patterns.

man its real easy.. take a snare from a zay Kit or any 808 kit..

then pitch up like 5 pads of the same snare like +10, +30 +50 +70 +90 or how ever you want it to sound then you can do it manually or with note repeat its easier in programs like fruity loops or Logic where you can see the notes..

MPCs are washed up for that southern feel.

Well ive been trying that except turning the pitch of the drums down as I went down the line, and i havent been able to do it right. The finished product sounds like s h i t. Maybe Its because i have a 1000 and the note repeat only goes to 1/32. Does the mpc 2000 note repeat go up to 1/64, i dont even know but ill keep trying, but thx...

now as far as the south and sounding washed up, i dont know whats good with tokyo, but Southern Producers are still using the MPC, Mannie Fresh is a prime example. And all the guys i listed in my first post still use the MPC (shawty redd,zay) Long live the MPC.

what do you mean by double the BPM? Are you talkin about speedin up the tempo?

Yes, for example if you want your song to be 90 BPM make 180, so you can do those faster notes easier. If you want to know more do a search.

The drumrolls are real easy to do. I just used the note repeat.

this is the key to those drum rolls and how they have the feel that they do.

I slow the bpm down then do the drum roll

Example og tempo 74

I'll slow it down to 50 or 40 then play my drum or snare rolls ahead of the meter then turn the bpm back and Boom there ya go

i find it way more logical to slow down the sequence, play them , sometimes without quantize... but as close as i can get, the offbeatness vanishes once its turned back to a faster bpm and its almost unnoticeable but has a feel of its own...

or u can quantize.. but either ways, i find it easier to think my patterns when my beat is slowed down compared to the final version..

step edit is nice for really complicated rolls.
