Anybody moved from sample based beats to start from scratch?

I'm really thinking of it now. WHY? 'Cus sampling takes much time (digging), it takes much money (have to work) ans it's not completely your idea. On the other side, well you know, dope samples are dope!
And I already spent 3 months hardcore learning keyboard and I'm starting to like it.

No advanced keyboarding will ever replace samples.

I like to do both. I think sampling is easier, you already have your groove, you just tweak it mix some together and make it your own. All in all though I think the best ones I have ever made mix composition and sampling.

Sample your synths, for that 'sampled' feel and sound.

Sample + Synthesis = Better all-round production skills and promotes original compositions.

My sampling game is not tight at all, thats not how I started.

I've always done my writing from scratch. But I also like to blend in a sample to flavor up the tune a bit.

I def don't get down with using all samples to make a tune. I never got with using other folk's work to end up calling it my own.

pretty much, samples to me spice up a nice beat or tune i've made but i always feel like i don't have enough

the digging process to me is kinda uncomfortable... and record stores with no players to hear the records.. annoying.. and wasting money on records, coming home playing them and they suck & there's no samples but i will start digging more i think when im properly set up and back into making music

Yes, there was a time when I would make all synth beats. I would spend 6 hours every other day recording my keyboard improvisations onto cd, then I would take a sampler of choice and chop and flip my work. It was very fun because the stuff I intended to make got flipped into another direction so you end up creating something new as you go.

I got like 50 cds of those secret sessions, but now I'm into diggin' in the crates again and think I'll be here for a while.

i do both. i mix it up depending on what i feel. i started out mostly going from scratch but as i grew and learned more about flipping samples i started doing it more. i flip between em both and now i even sample my playing and chop it and sequence it like a sample then even play over it. i try to be fluid.

Now sampling your own stuff and flipping it or augmenting it, is very creative. It's something that has that 100% originality to it and you're the only one that truely owns the rights to do whatever to it without the fear of repercussions.

Can't get any better than that.

Yeah man, I would make jazz pieces like you do, but flip the juicy parts into Hip Hop. I went back to records because its kind of like a first love I had since 8yrs old. Something about the vinyl.

At the moment I'm trying to master that vinyl sound, and trying to make it work. All I can say is that with the right equipment and knowledge you can make some music without it sounding like it came from a keyboard. Its all about creating that supernatural feel.

I don't think this way. There is a lot of nice stuff from keyboard and when we will talk about rap it's most obvious that samples are dope for this music, but I don't think you can use samples everywhere with the same effect.

I'm totally in the middle on this one, I actually find it a lot harder to make sample based tracks, I have no idea why. Yet at the same time I love love love to dig for samples, but with samples no matter how much I try to be different I still can't help thinking that I'm just flippin someone else's music and callin it my own, even though I know for a fact that I have my very own method of doing it.... but then again when I make NON sample based tracks they sound shit cos I don't have the money for good equipment and the sound is shit. agghhh ****, anyone wanna buy a 2500?

Presets like what jaem? The creative part comes from taking nothing and making something out it without the aid of ready made material.

Preset sounds, preset beats, loops?

Maybe preset synth patches, instrument timbres, and combis...?
