DRUMS!!!

ALRIGHT. im sorry but this has been pissin me off for a long asss time now. when making a drum beat i noticed that most producers have a kick and then a different kick and then the snare. i was wondering how the FUK you do this. i know its everybodys secret but i am about to kill someone to find out.

is it another pitch of the same kick?
is it a whole other kick?
filter, eq, WHAT???

please if u wana share this it would realy help me and im sure a MILLION other people here.

what do you mean a kick and then another kick?

do u mean layered? in which case i would say a lot of people layer kicks to give them more of a punch.

if not you are just talkin about the rhythm if the beat which of course is completely arbitrary.

Can you point us to a specific track with this techinique, I think I know what you mean but just wanna make sure.

layer your drums with an 808 or 909. Let them trigger based on the kick pad if you want thicker drums

He means two seperate kick sounds.

Do what you want with them. You don't even need two. Make your beats how you want. You could use more than two. Do whatever.

just make a huge ass program with more than one kick.

put the kick on 1 and another on 1.5 or 3.5 and what not.

i cant get my drums to suond like this
even with timing correction off they dont sound this loose or natural

If you're refering to the "boom" of the second kick then do exactly what samplerate said, layer a 808 under the second kick. If you're refering to the kick before the 1, it's just a velocity offset.

As far as the timing and feel of the track, play with the swing settings 'til you get it movin' how you want.

right now i mostly sample of vinyl and its gona be hard to find and identify an 808 kick and i wana get more sounds anyways

i know ur gonna say buy from tutor but i wan other suggestions too i already know tutors drums

do a search on "808 drum samples", you'll get a lot of hits for free 808 samples.

Don't just throw 'em up under your other kicks, tweak the shit out of 'em to get the sound you want.

i always under estimated the 808 kick. Seriously, but thats the secret.

Other ideas:

layer your kick with your bassline.

layer your kick with your melody. or vice versa, lay your melody on top the kick.

drop out bass, then add 808 for change ups.

lay down the kicks, then do a overdub with a lower velocity kick right before the main kick.

redo the kick after the whole beat is done (not always) but you can reaccent the main melody/bassline-or even better do kicks last

cut out overlapping frequencies with layering kicks and basses-usually i cut the low end of the bass, and leave the 808, but with other kicks, i cut the higher end of the bass(basically whatever sounds the best)

get a bunch of kick samples, edit them in soundforge and do eq in there

Like everyone stated what you are probably hearing is a layered kick being followed by a stand alone kick, it could also be the velocity too. Here's my tip on phat drums: try compression and EQ seems real simple, but it may take you a lot of trial and error to get them just right like you want them. Good Luck, hope I helped a lil bit.
