sound module drums or sampled drums?

what would you recommend? cuz i hear a lot of people sayin that with smpled drums they like to tweak em and with sound module drums they sound too generic? what's up? what's your take on it? insight please. snares too i guess......

Use both. Tweak until it sounds good to you and use it.
If sound modules sound to generic to them then it sound like they are not taking the time to layer and tweak or they are just too lazy. Sounds like they are just wanting a complete bangin drums set right out the box which most of the time doesn't happen. I use generic drum alot but i leyer and tweak the hell outta them and they end up sounding like a totally different drum than when I started and are 95% of the time perfect for my hiphop/hard rap tracks.

Key is to take time with whatever you got and try to make it better, layer, eq, saturate, bit convert, whatever it takes to make your stuff shine. Laziness to experiment is like cryptonite to a producer.

chop up breaks for best results..its no big secret..they may not knock like lil jon or whatever but its gonna sound much much more realistic..i wonder why that is??j/k

what do you mean chop up the breaks tho....that's where i get a little confused? you mean like add a lot of variations to the percussion/drums?

I use samples off vinyl, internet and everywhere. I have NO preferrence.
As long as I can get it to sound how I want I'm happy. Some people don't get that little concept though. Get it to sound how YOU want, not how it's given to you. Anyone can use something that is just given to them but make it your own creation, personalize it, give it your midas touch. It's cool when people just start off making music, they get sucked into default sounds w/o tweaking. As you progress you want more and look for more, then comes layering sounds on top of sounds on top of sounds.

i sample my emu drums. Basically ill tweak the filters on my emu px7(with mophatt expansion) then ill sample it once i like it. This way im never just getting a preset.

Once i get my beat finished, ill use my mpc filters to fine tune them....or layer them, or even switch them up to fit the mix. But anyways.......Nothing ever ends up "preset" or even what i originally sampled.

Some keyboards and sound modules have their fare share of weak drum sounds, but you can get some good ones. Most drums can be improved by simple layering.

But i like my sampled emu drums better than my sampled vinyl drums.......but it all depends on the type of track im going for.

Its hard to get that "break" feel from sound module drums.

But anyways, if i were to recomend a sound module.....the motif drums are nice...and so are the emu ones. I dont reallly like the others.........in general, stay away from triton drums (they need to be fixed) But i am also in love with my emu drums. So really i might be biased.

you def speak to me bro....i've got the mophatt and the roland 5080. absolutely all you need for sound modules 4 sure. layering drum kicks right? how do you get them on the same pad?? or how do you layer them exactly? thanks yo

what mpc do you have?

on the mpc2xl......you "open window" in program mode....where you assign the samples to the pad.....a window should pop up that says something like: "siml play" that means simaltaneous play. Just assing the pad.

The problem with this is, that both samples have to be assigned to a separate pad first.

But what i do sometimes is, lay down my drum sound in the sequence. Then overdub another kick over it, or snare, or whatever. This way i have easy control over mixing the levels of each layer.

On the mophatt. You can layer the drums by editing the patches.........put a drum kit on one layer, then another on the second, and transpose the layers if you have to, to get the sounds to match up. But on the mophatt i would find a kick you like (or at least close to what you want) then open up the edit section...go to filters.....try selecting differant filters you should be suprised, buy you can get some nice bump. Mess with the controller knobs to adjust the Q and velocity of the fitler.

BTW. when im around my mophatt, ill open up a preset and let you know how much i adjust one of the filters and give you the parameters so you can do it!

can you assign midi triggered sounds to the mp tho? i tried and it wouldn't play over the other ones. in simutaneous

The planet phatt and mo phatt have the best drums in a module that I have heard next to making your own stuff.
