whats yur method of pad layout

do you guys just throw samples onto the pads and hit them to find a snare, a kick or hat or special effect or do you have some methology to how you lay them down, ,if so just post them up.

hi-hats along the right side (pads 4, 8, 12, 16).
kicks along the bottom (pads 1, 5, 2, 3)
snares on pads 6 & 7
the rest for various percussion or more kicks and snares

edit: what's your tactic?

4 kicks on bottom row pads 1,2,3,4
4 snares second rowpads 5,6,7,8
4 hi-hats pads 9,10,11,12 open or closed
whatever perc/cymabals on top row 13,14,15,16



this is how I chop up drum looops

I have kicks on the 1st, snare on the 2nd and hats on the 3rd, For samples its just the order that I chop them. And then I have a bass pgm that is about 25 different basstones that I use for my bass

for your bass tones, do you pick one, then use 16 levels to write bass lines?

that is a good idea. I keep my bass tones in a folder on my computer. Then drag over to the mpc via usb.

usually I get lucky , and can find a good bass tone in a sample. But, the way yuou do it is a great Idea. I am gonna bite your style

well here goes, i am presently transforming my mp into a full module, .

keys, strings, horns,, bass, percs, stabs, drums, etc.

i wrote a PGM tht will be compatible with a GM layout kit. ( thanks to mpc 3000 ) but with a difference. which means i can switch to my module and they will be all lined up.

i have the pads laid out to how i feel comfortable playing them.

lowfloor tom clap cowbell tambourine

hi tom hi mid tom lo mid tom low tom

kik2 closed hat pedal hat open hat

kik 1 rimshot snare1 snare2

also they continue to bank B with crash, percs, agogo blocks traingle, all in sequence.


personal kit
picked samples and famous 808 and 909,
would have slight variations, for eg only four toms and the drums just stay on bank A, percs would be on bank B along with others.

instruments are chroamatically laid out if using just 1 sample for bass, wurlys, rhoades, etc.

blamk PGM written, for making multi sampled instruments.

and finally over 500 one shot hits, all over the place, like how emu did thier hip hop kit on the keyboard. also dedicated kik kits, snare kitsm hats kits, tom kits, bass kits , etc.

i am in the process of doing this now, and stopped to make this post to hear any other views, i might just go ahead with it, cause there is no real way to lay out those i guess. so i will just hit a pad and if it sounds nice then i work with it,

I hate GM layout, never use it, I just set my pads in midi note order cuz I use the pads with other samplers and anything else is pretty unworkable.

Skip the GM midi note mapping and lay them out chromatically, then lay them out how you want.

1st row-Kicks
2nd row-Snares
3rd row-Toms
4th row-Hats

What I did is I sampled a few basses that I liked. Like the hyper bottom from reason, and a few others. I sample like 2 notes like a B,F, and then I just use 16 levels. After I made a few I just started trading with people who made there own. WHen I make a beat and I save it, I just purge the ones I didn't use to save space.

i be purgin'. I have over 250 drum kits that I have made. alll with the same layout. I load alll of them, and start working on patterns. When I have a pattern that I like, I start scrolling though diffent sounds till I find something I like., then purge every thing.

snare on pad 1, kick on 2, closed hi on 3

my main chops and/or loops plus sub melody sounds go from pads 13 to 16, 9 to 12, etc., usually in order of importance to the beat with 13 having highest priority. i don't go past bank a much, only if i really chop up a sample, then i put all those chops in bank b. the pads in between the drums and chops/loops are used for extra drum sounds or layering. if i have 1 or 2 pads left i'll assign my played and sampled basslines to them.

as for kits, i guess i don't have any really. I have a "Samples" zip disk where i have recent/unused samples categorized by instrument and i have a drums folder full of sub folders (kicks, snares, hi hats, cymbals, breaks, perc.)

i am in the process of laying them out, instead what idid was to leave the GM pgm blank.
now i gonna assign the samples chroma... in order of how i like. i never thought of the situation of using other samplers.

Not the samples, but the midi note numbers in chromatic order, then the samples can go wherever. Trust me.

yeah sounds similar- like skawala was rightly trying to achieve with the gm layout i like to keep some standard so i can flah up new kits or programs to replace bass sounds, drums or to just layer them up and they work- i dont always do it as im not always using three kicks twos snares etc but most of the time i stick to a standard

same with mixer channels- channel 2 is always bass drum, stereo outs are always hats and percussion etc, 8 is bass

spedning time setting your stuff up makes the jamming more intuitive- if you dont feel musical but wanna do something mpc just spend time deciding on a format and start making all your programs that format....

better yet buy mike goins' mpceditor software- great for bulk stuff

geez um, i have been up from 9 this morning, its 3 now, and i havent even gotten half way, through kits. aaaaaaaaaaaah, and i still got bass and keys to map out. from 2 days ago. oh man
