East V West

WUick ? for all the heads.
I got a boy who does "west coasty" style beats, he always starts tracks with the bassline and builds from there.

I got boys who do "east coasty" production and they always start with the sample or the loop.

hmmm I was wondering how you cats do it, and how you qualify your style, IE do all you east coast style cats do the sample or loop first?

how about you cats from the Dirty, Dirty?

I start with whatever has been playing in my head all day. If it's a beat then I start with that. If it's a rhythm I will lay that down. I have no coast cause I can make different style stuff but many say my beats are east coast but my basslines belong to the west. I'm from L.A. though.

I'll either start with the sample and then add drums or begin with drums and ajust the samples to fit drum tempo.

I aint trying to typecast anyone into "east" or "west" thats why I put it in ""'s, but yeah, I try to just get the beat in my head out most of the time, and my boys say the same but when I watch any of them work, I notice that they all start out with a "preset" pattern of sorts, and I just want to get an idea of how y'all workin it. SO I CAN BE LIKE PHARELL AND JACK IT FOR FREE. BWAHAHAHAHAH
no joke, though I wonder if they will get sued for that or not. If dude who accused them can prove it (IE has a paper trail of giving them stuff, and then them blowing him off) he might win out on that one, or at least settle out of court for some points on the CLones album. (that would be nice, lets see, 1 point 7 pennies, times 2,000,000 (double plat) = 14 grand, nice little payday.)

i try to do the same as you guys put down the beats floating in my head, but i aint got that down yet. i try to make east coast type style hip hop music, cuz thats what i was brought up on, but my beats never sound like they do in my head,

people tell me it sounds west coast style, but the thing is ,is that i dont' use a bassline sometimes.

i start my beats many different ways,

melody and drum programming... simultaneously...

whatevers clever. depends on what sample i hear first when i am in the mood to make a beat, or if i m not in the mood, what sample puts me in the mind set to make beats. no set way of doing it.

I either make a tight drum pattern first den add a brass, synth parts etc....or ill find a tight melody /arp off da keyboard and lay da drums around that.

Lately I've been starting with a hhat/bass pattern and building from there.

Hey Doc Foo. Good qeustion. Got me thinking about how I do anything. I'm not a musician. I'm a visual artist who was a radio DJ and started to do sound/radio theater. I got into producing tracks because a friend suggested that I get a sampler for my sound fx and told me that I could produce Hiphop tracks with it. That was back in 1889 Since then, I've been messing seriously with various digital instruments.

Alla that to say that I have no idea what I'm going to do when I step to this MPC3000. I may tap out a high hat pattern and build from there. Back in the day, I always used a loop to start with. Sometimes, I use a kick drum or a bass sound to build from. But, the thing that takes me out is that I have no idea usually and just work at it, chipping away until I have something that works for me.

Anybody else in my shoes?

Thanks for pulling my coat Boogie. Damn. What a slip. 1989 is long ago enough, 1889 is on some ole "Reconstruction Era" stuff. Must be the Lil Jon and East Side Boyz videos I've been watchin. Made me think of the scenes from "Birth of a Nation." Check it, if you haven't seen it.
