Getting a Guitar Strumming sound out of a Synth?

Hi Guys,

I need to recreate the feel of K-os's song Superstar Pt 2 of his Exit Album.
He plays a really simple Guitar strumming riff to accompany the Bass and Drums. I wanted to try putting a synth sound to replace the simple up and down strumming of the accoustic guitar except i want to retain that strumming like sound.
This is really hard to explain... But does anyone have any tips on how to achieve this. I'm guessing ill have to mess around with the delay settings or something i have no idea about.
Tried to use the search but came up with nothing.
I have a Motif which should be able to come up with something like that on it.
Hopefully you guys get what i mean.

Ive been trying to get strumming out of a synth too for the longest time and ive given up. Its not gonna be realistic but there is a vsti i played with in a GC named virtual guitarist 2 from steinberg which was as close as it gets. It has stumming patterns but no single notes so its limited if you want to create melodies, this is the closest thing to a real guitar. I gave up and bought a real guitar and im trying to learn how to play it now, nothing better than the real instruments.

Colony's right. The Virtual Guitarist is kind of a newer version of the Oberheim Strummer, a box that was built to turn your keyboard parts into "strums". It was quite popular, too. Other than those two, some companies have made pretty decent arps to simulate strumming, but not too much variation. You'd have to dig in a do a bit of editing to make it work as you needed it to.

Does the "Karma" software do something like this, ie. arpeggiate notes into a 'strumming' pattern?

just play them into your MPC with a real guitar and chop

Hmm...wouldn't that require you to actually be able to play, even a little bit? Or at the least know a bunch of chords? Besides, he's looking to replicate the strumming with a synth sound.

I am not looking to recreate a guitar.

What i want to do is have a synth sound that has that "strumming" effect..
Its hard to explain but i want to be able to hit a chord on the Motif, and then have it arrpegiate in a kind of strumming fashion.... Get it?

The Yamaha RS7000 is one of the most slept on pieces of hardware in recent years. Has a sequencer mod job designed specifically for this purpose.

i ran into him at the airport here.

i suggest getting the sound u want, put it on 2 pads, one for up, and one for down,

then f*ck with the attack on both,

one fast, and one slow....

mess around with the filters attack too....

I was afraid that was the only way to do it!

Oh well, the trick will be getting two chords or pitching it up right that it actually fits.

Any ideas of the top of your head on how to set the attack?

The Karma does indeed have some strumming features but since I play guitar, I've never used them. I'll look at it later and let ya know.....I'm not hopeful as I've worked with strumming simulators briefly in the past and they weren't even close....

man i didnt not like the steinberg virtual drummer all, i messed with it a bit before i got my mpc, turned my off to even think of trying the virtual bass or guitar or anything else.. waste of time IMO


and as for the attack, one fast, and one slow... ? just mess with it, i dont know what sound your trying to get so i cant say - just make it work for ya!

You can design a arpegiator to do this.

Maybe search for midi patterns you could use. On the motif you also have rps, where you could assign a strumming midi pattern to. kind of like an arp on one key.
