Discuss the various methods you use in music production, from compressor settings to equipment type.

I've learned a lot from reading everyone's post. Some I agree with, some I do not.
It appears to me, in my opinion, that many of you focus on your craft of beat creation because you are a beatmaker and that is OK.

I have always been a DJ on the Technique 1200's mixing the instrumental on one deck and the pella on the other deck. I also remixed songs such as taking the snare and kick drum of MJ's beat it and reprogram it to create a different beat but still have the MJ beat it vibe. I did this in the club and radio for many years.

My inspiration comes from listening to producers Mantronix back in the days and the Latin Rascals mastermix show on New York 98.7 Kiss fm back in the 80's.
That is why I incorporate sampling from top artist drums and use it when I remix.
I would never, ever jack sounds or beats and call it my own. The reason I provide a download link is because many people that follow me on YT use these kits and try it for themselves. Like I said, out of my 144 videos, only 6 are using drums from top producers. My other videos are either samples, remixes, or me making beats with my own drum kits.

Just know that my intention was not to jack Dilla/Pete Rock/ATCQ drums and make it my own. Nope! I am not that person. Peace!!!!!!

the thing is... by making those sample packs available for download, you are essentially encouraging and facilitating others to do just that which you're saying you don't approve of.

I totally disagree because not everyone that watch my videos are beatmakers. Am I the only person that remix and everyone else are just making beats? I do the beat, the a paella, and the video on top for the ultimate remix package. If that is not your thing, cool. But don't sit there and tell me that I'm breaking some kind of unspoken rule.

Once upon a time, long before the first digital sampler ever sampled a funkbreak, long before the first MC ever picked up a microphone, it was all about the DJ.
Not just a DJ, but a DJ with two exact copies of a record, which he used to play the break of the song back to back as a loop.
And the DJ who had the dopest loops would be dopest DJ in town. So it became quite a sport to find those dope breaks. DJ's always wanted to keep their breaks secret, just to stay ahead of the competition. But if you could find out what the name of that party crashing record was, and you were able to track it down and dig it up all by yourself, you kind of earned the permission to spin this at your local block party...

It's 2013 now...Some people still follow these principals, others don't. Some Christians go to church on saturdays, others go to church on sundays.

I also think it's lazy to sample sampled drums of a hiphop record if you're really trying to make a 'product' for serious release. I don't give a **** about what those kids do in their bedroom when just having some after homework fun. At least I've never heard hiphop Jesus saying it's not allowed to sample hiphop records.

Well to me from from Reggie's elaborations he's using the mastered/hip hip record chops to make remixes and mix with, but with the modern tech (CDJ+Computer etc.), it's easy to stack up more stuff in a way not unlike crafting a beat from scratch, but obviously the "parts" are more on pre-fabricated tip.

But if that stuff is for the the mixing solely and his own beats are made in the more traditional, nearly universally accepted way I have no issue.

If it was my video, I might have said something to the effect of, "youngsters use these to remix, study and practice, but for your own songs maybe leave these at door."

So basically like I said I'm peace with Reggie but I could see a younger cat not making the distinction with the kit after he DL's it.

If there's one dude like Golden Age, there must be others, wouldn't make them correct though regardless of their numbers, And this thread and the last 30+ years prove Golden Age's opinions are like 999:1 in the minority at the least.

But that guy was trying to "prove" open season is the way by constantly referencing the very alternative to the jacking he was condoning...I maen the guy didn't understand that two people could sample the record... :hmmm:

This thread has made me recall when Lenny Kravitz produced a Madonna joint. He took a sampler and straight up looped Public Enemy's "Security Of The First World" track.

PE/Bomb Squad was not happy, and were not going to for second accept the fact that because they sample old records that Lenny should just take their entire track and have Madonna sing on it. Basically proof positive producers generally are not cool with that kind of wholesale lifting.

So The Shocklee's/Stephney/Sadler while recording the Young Black Teenagers LP come up with a track called "To My Donna" with YBT addressing the ish over the S1W track. I think it's fair to say they didn't approve.

I still gotta side with crossings who reiterated my original point and after checking out reggies other videos some do advertise the the more traditional technique of chopping the og breaks however there are also further producer kits and in the videos, like the mobb deep and outkast ones, he makes a full track with the samples in chops in some cases that includes instrumentation and drum hits!? The final beat is then mixed with a acapella and not titled as a outkast/mobb deep remix and only highlights them as the kit source now that shows that reggie is both creating beats with entire mobb deep samples and doing other beats with og breaks and samples so its hard to call the dude out for not knowing the game as he clearly does

I probly jumped the gun when first posting on your youtube reg by saying f*ck you i probly shouldve checked out more of your videos. Still reading the comments on your page its clear that heads are coppin ypur kits and just replaying them on their beats i dont think thats cool but its down to your own principles. I have a question tho wheres the instrumentation from on the beat at the end of the ATCQ kit video is that a sample from another hip hop record or is it from somewhere else?...i thought i recognised it?

Nice post metatron i think that illustrates the point many of us are making very well and coming from a real situation from a real pioneer its all the more apt im pretty sure everyone here can agree that is a wack move from kravitz

I only went by Reggie's posts here at face value, so if the videos tell a different story, oh well. But even as he implied he didn't use the jacked stuff for ground up original productions as opposed to remixes the whole attitude along with the...3...I think co-signers, he was kind of hollering so what if I did? And we're back at square one with the discussion.

I'll say again, this thread + my 30 or so years around hip hop brings the total of people I've met who sample finished hip hop records to 4 or 5, and that's if 4 people co-signed in this thread. I have only met one person in the real world that did that.

He had brought beats to my house and I was like "your drums are thin as hell, have background musical content in them and call me crazy but almost sound like they're off finished Pete Rock joints..."

Guy was like, "yeah that's exactly what it is." I was like did you at least commit this pointless act with a CD or vinyl because it sounds awful and frankly is shiesty. He's like no mp3's, who cares? I was like 128kbps I bet too right? Yep.

He tried to lecture me that I was "one of those heads, and how wrong people are more...." and so on, basically foreshadowing this thread for me 7 years earlier.

But the sound aspect is another thing in this. Even if you had no moral qualms taking hits like that, it's hip hop mastering. It's not like the original hits where you have room to do your own heavy compression or distortion or whatever you like to do.

After a buss compressor and say a limiter those already mastered hip hop drums can easily get squashed to nothing.

I don't know, it takes the same amount of time and effort to just not do this, so I just don't get it. When I first got ITB DAW stuff years ago I went online and saw these cheap ass RZA and Dilla kits (literally off their joints) for sale and on warez sites and my jaw just dropped that such a corny thing even existed let along would be grabbed by anyone in a world of a trillion other drums.

Yeah man i guess it really comes down to your final product and what your hopes for it are if like reggie your main contribution to music and your output is through a youtube account then audio isnt really your top priority and hits/comments are, so what your offering to people has to be eye catching and loud the principles of the matter arent really important...i mean wshh have made a living off content devoid of morals why cant our man reg

I mean i dont even torrent and would offer amazon/itunes links if i was to win a battle so maybe im in the minority but when your ripping dirtstyle records off and openly sharing your rips on youtuube (*cough*reggie*cough*) i think its fair to say you dont give a sh*t about supporting the industry...maybe thats another thread tho

Yo meta, it's a shame I didn't know Madonna jacked p.e, but I knew JayZ (dj quik) used that Madonna sample. Soon as those p.e drums started playing I was like, that's justify my thug, wtf :hmmm:

Ha Ha! Yeah, you support the industry? What do you do to support the industry? I am dying to hear this one. I see you have a few videos on youtube yourself so I am not the only one capturing a youtube crowd there buddy.

Dude, don't get so mad just keep making your videos where you guys are walking in circles holding the camera and I will keep making my little videos on youtube.

I know it eats you up inside but I am hip hop....and hip hop is me.
Ah man, you're talking about my battle record now and me sharing that? Dude, you may just want to stay away from my youtube account before you have a meltdown.

It seems like you're so focused on pointing out what I am doing, your equipment is collecting dust.

Dude, I hate to disappoint you but I have been purchasing records / equipment since 1985 and in 2013, I still belong to a couple of remix record clubs. I support local artists here in Tampa, I still spend money when top artists come here. As a matter of fact, I am going to see Public Enemy next week with my $70.00 ticket.
I am off for a couple of days so if you want to continue going back and forth, let's go. What else you got for me? :smoker:

Nuthin dude this little spat has run its course im not lookin to continue this any further...i think ive made my feelings on the cannibilistic nature of your producer kits and the bad habits they incourage quite clear

No doubt we'll meet again in similar circumstances...i patiently wait the 'P.E live: straight from the stage kit' :P
