Offbeat isn't a derogatory term. It means to not be in sync with the click/metronome/tempo. This can be done purposely to create mood. That doesn't mean you have no rhythm. It just means you have utilized rhythm to create a mood that is abnormal. I said I heard Black Milk say something like that not that no one in Detroit doesn't have any rhythm. I never hated on Dilla at all. Damn.

I was wondering if it just needed to be done that way.
I thought maybe there was a less time consuming way but that will do.

as much as i am feeling the dude persistance in learning different techniques......this was theeeee DUMBEST thread, ok well maybe not the DUMBEST, but cot damn clsoe enough ! Good Luck With ur offbeat beat

I appreciate it. I will try that again too. I wonder how much you can mess with the metronome in the MPC.... hmmmm. That would be crazy..... Maybe use a click sound that has silence in front of it so the click is off.

That would be a mad weird way to do it, but that could work too.....

when you add swing and/or shift you can select a specific range in time so why not just select like a 2 beat long range at a time twist it up and then copy and paste that however long you want.

you have to make sure to pay attention to what your doing otherwise it will really sound like a mess.

I've noticed something in particular.

Alot of cats are always wanting to get that off beat feel/style, I think a good way about going about it is to improve your timing learning exactly how to play on beat to begin with.
Study, learn all you can about staying on beat in different time signatures etc. and then it becomes more of a natural transition when your experimenting with irregular rhythms.

I say this because I noticed cats just doing the offbeat stuff but without an understanding of how to really play on beat. It's similar to someone saying they want to draw Anime but don't understand how practicing real life drawings will help their foundation.

I say you can do it up man, but just make sure your foundation skills are strong too.

just play the rhythm you want. i dont use quantize as well, or even a midi sequencer for that matter, but more often or not you just need to think of the rhythm you want and just play it till you catch it and it feels right. one lesson i learned is that its easier to document an idea by pretending i dont have the ability to edit it later and get it right going into the machine.

just feel it out.
