What are your opinions on hardware compressors. Any good ones out thier you recomend. I currently have a Behringer Composer. Its alright. Any of you have a particular compressor you run your drums beats through? Also, would you use hard knee or soft knee on drums? Do you think it would be a good idea to have a second compressor for your entire mix or maybe for all your other keyboard modules and samplers?

maybe it's just a given, but I just attah 3 pads, pan one left, one right, one right up the middle, add resonance to the left/right, then filter out down to about 60-70 on the middle and add resonance, then set the volume of the sample itself to 200...if you play with the pan/filter/resonance, you can get really punchy snares...best bet is to get the ultimate breaks and beats and use those to layer with whatever drums you want since there's a wide variety there (snap, punch, clap, etc.)...like that Al Green rim-shot layers nice with just about anything to make a snappy, clear snare....don't rely on too much equipment, it kills your creativity....

Have any of you tried to layer your sounds in say "Wavelab" or "Soundforge" and then add a compression plug-ins to fatten the sound. I think I am going to try and stack some snares, add some compression, maybe mid-lowEQ

Having tried the said thing on a compressor at the weekend with a fat drum break I can say that it is the shiz - amazing! - compressed stuff on its own sounds like meiso era dj krush - but layer it on the loop with the original sample and tweak the volumes on both and you have a PHAT set of drums - you can forget layering on the 2000xl - do it on the mixing desk with compression for ultimate bump.

guys i've got a financial hick up.

but i got on mine dj mixer (were my mpc en stuff is all hooked up) a effect in and out, and i also got a free input. is it possible to hook up a compressor to the effect out and in and sample the sound with the compressor change back into my mpc?

if it's possib;e i don't have to cop the s900, and that will save my ass

btw: one of the reasons i scrapped my 2000xl was the weak ass snare output. Drum sounds in general for that matter. Too much trouble to make it sound "right"

The difference is subtle but things tend to have more punch. The 2000's converters seems to have a crispy sound, the conversion process adds some mid high freq noise to the sample. This is good for some sounds (crispy sounding stuff) but can be bad for some

what about sample drums with your MPC, from there send it to a tapedeck (to tape that is) en from there sample it back to the MPC.

does that give your drums some special sound?

Every little thing you do makes a difference.

I was needle-less for about two months and was sampling drums from our old analog 8 track, these tapes are like 5-7 years old, definetly sounded edgier than using a wav or a akai disk, but a little noisier than necessary. Keep experimenting.

That will make sense for some sounds, but i doubt it will do a drumloop any good. But you can try it, it will probably only muffle your sound a bit.
