I layer samples. Basically I start with acoustic drumkits and percussion (buy, download, sample from vinyl etc.) and electronic drumsets (808s 909s and other old drum machines) and filter, fade in/fade out, delay, EQ, compress, reverb, etc. I also layer other elements like noise, sine/square/saw/triangle waves and anything else I can think of.
I also break out the mic and sample claps and snaps, beatboxing, pots and pans, tapping on my desk, tapping on a woofer cone, someone walking up the stairs, or just about anything. I use them on their own or as layers with the samples above.
Basically whenever you buy a drum sample set (unless its an acoustic drumkit or samples directly from an old school drum machine) they're gonna be created using the same source samples and processes above. So I just do it myself. Once you get into it, you can create the perfect drums for an track in 5 minutes or less.
