I bought my audio pc in 2003 and it's still working well! It hasn't got a lot of power but it can still handle complex arrangements with lots of tracks.
The only upgrade to your computer you *may* want to make would just be to get a 7200 RPM drive if you don't have one. Otherwise it's just a good idea to save your takes on a separate drive anyways. It should be more than beefy enough of a system to manage many tracks though (16, 32? who knows). If you're not planning on going plugin hog wild you should be able to do all of the basics that you'd want such as eq/filter and have a single reverb for any tracks to go through. Your current computer should be good enough to get a big part of the job done.
If you've got a decent audio interface (8 ins?) then you should be able to track out pretty quickly, but still not have to worry too much about the computer until it's actually time to mix down. So you can probably keep your current work flow and not have the computer get too in the way until it's actually time to use the DAW. Just my 2 cents though.
