time stretching the sample would actually be more work then that... they just chromatically pitched it up.

well, I read or saw an interview where kanye said that Chaka Khan "liked" his "through the wire" use of her vocals and song.


Was it her liking him making her sound like minnie mouse or was it her liking the check she may have gotten if she owned any of the publishing.


I just can't imagine a talented singer " liking" a producer using that much of their vocals yet altering their pitch that much. Seems like a slap in the singer's face like " you don't sound cool enough on this record unless I minnie mouse you up"


maybe like someone said earlier that it is done to save sample memory, yet seems like people do it now like they HAVE to do it to fit in a certain hip hop box or something

I think one reason people pitch up sampled vocals is because they don't want people to know what it is....... If I played a well known artist voice let's say Celine Dion, If I wanted to sample something she sing's in a song, her voice is soooo well know I couldn't pull it off without paying some money to use it.(or get caught real easy)
Now if I pitch it up/down chop it and play it over a drum beat and some keys 99.99999% of these dumys who only listen to rap, would never know where it came from and they (the dumys) you look like you came up with some ill gansta sheet....... Then your on your way to produce the next Wacka Flame hip pop track and further destroy the real art of hip hop

Gotta disagree with yall on this one, theres some dope sh*t to be made from pitching up. Granted Kanye's through the wire joint is an example of overdoing it but overall, when done right it can be as dope as any other sample
