learning how to mix and master/mixing your own music

Trial and error, a lot of practice, treat your room,
Avoid headphones for mixing, use them for checking the mix, treat your room, get decent monitors, trat your room etc, etc, did i forget treat your room?

yeah i have that book, i had to buy it for the class i took. i haven't really looked at it much but i'll definitely check it out, i completely forgot about it cause the teacher never assigned us anything. thanks for reminding me

I know... i have been makin music for like 5 years and i have read many ppl mixing with headphones.. it has never worked out for me..

i guess i better save up for some monitors. but will they be any good even if i'm in a room that isn't really designed well for this stuff? its just a back porch i built off my bedroom, it was a balcony with screen walls and i put up wood and insulation and drywall and plaster and paint, so its like a legitimate room but i don't know if getting monitors would even help. if i taped up some of that foam shit would that help? i don't even know, i'm not gonna be here much longer im going to college in a year and a half so idk if its even worth putting much work into. i just want a decent mix on my music so that i have control over how it sounds and it sounds presentable.

it's probably ok if you're only making music to be listened to on ipods and phones by people who only like rubbish music!

I say first step is you need to hear what you're working with. room treatment plus decent speakers + D/A.

sure, you can mix with headphones, non-treated room, but with making the listening right. you get there 99% of the time with 99% less hassle/work.
