He uses the 20/1 feature on the Limiter to make his beats stand out...


The Sp-202 does have limits thou..

It only has 8 poloyphony..
So you dont wanna use one shots only like 2 or three...

So only 8 pads can play at a time

What I would actually prolly do is just record my drum loops from my MPC into a 202... Basically I wouldn't re-sample into the 202 until the sequencing was all done... Then this way all I'd have to do is loop the drums on the 202 and then use a limiter on the outputs from there... I'm experimenting with that on the 505 right now... It definitely adds some color, but maybe I wanna use the 202 to get that grittier sound...

So wait... Madlib uses a 20/1 Ratio on the limiter on his drums or on the whole mix... Thats kind of an interesting fact to know... Cause Basically I have a Compressor that can be used as a Limiter right now if I really turn the Ratio up... It's not great, but I could experiment with it and see if it does anything loike your talking about... I mean thats a really drastic Ratio so that's why I'm wondering how he does that but still gets everything to run through with a full sound...

ONLY ONLY WILL your mix sound good if it is running a 20/1 through a 1776ln limiter cause you can drive up the gain with out distortion and keep it coming through clear

The 20/1 settting is for his overall mix when its done...

So the Vocals again dont have to care out a space for the freq it just sits ontop of the mix
I said it somewhere before

The drums he uses a setting of 4 or the ALL BUTTON mode which sucks and pulls the sounds like there pumping...
I know that he adds distortion like that one atricle I showed you with the bass

I understand that no two compressor/limiters are alike... And I understand what you're saying as far as the 1776ln is the ONLY one that will do this... I'm just saying that right now I'm going through college which is expensive and only have a part time Job at Best Buy... I don't have the cash to spare for a 1776ln Limiter... Someday I'll save up... But In the meantime I gotta make do with what I have... Which is why I was just trying to understand the comcept of what Madlib does...

What you're saying does make much sense... His drums do have a pumping feel to them... Like the track he did for Diverse - "Beyond, Beyond" ... It's the same beat as on the Prince Po track "Too Much"... The bass and Drums both have a pumping effect... That's exactly what I'd love to have...

its the software version of the hardwar and is made by Universal Audio

IT contains the 1776ln limiter plugin you can use as an send or bus....

It works the same..
And is like 200 dollars

As for something like it Go find a Bombfactory Plugin for the 1776 limiter...

I will give you the plugins if you want...
what software you use for recording??

I use Adobe Audition... I'll be lookin up that UAD thing... Cause I like hardware but most of my mixing is done on the computer... So a software plug-in would be perfect...

By chance do you have the plug-in of the Sansamp PSA-1 Tube Pre-amp as well...

Definitely hit me back with that Bomb Factory 1776 Limiter plug-in in the meantime...

Yea like RZA... I heard the software version of the PSA is damn close to the hardware version...

I think Madlib's source material has a lot to do with the way his sh!t sounds. I suspect that he samples a lot of sh!t off the VCR.
Also, many of his tracks sound like the drum beats are already in the loops that he samples.
The way he mixes the track makes the drums sound a certain way too. He seems to put the drums pretty low in the mix (compared to most all hip hop records.)

It is lower... Yet it cuts through the mix... Freedom seems to have it down though... I'll be lookin for that UAD software to hold me over till I can afford the real deal...

i just use the good ol layering methods.

You shouldn't be producing if you don't want to... I mean to get your drums to stand out and create a signature sound... You gotta go all out...

to matiks u sampling into your 505 @ lofi sampling rate or using the lofi effect????
