Hi All,
One of my secrets, is to use the swing feature on the Yamaha AN200 when that is midi'd out to other gears' midi In. It has one button labelled swing. You press it until you like the feel. The AN200 has four tracks and is the old XOX style step sequencer.

However now I don't need it anymore. I just drum in the HH myself without quantize on the MPC4000. I find that it grooves just fine.

Cheers,
Ian

You gotta get the jingle jiggle in your shoulders, neck and head. Have somebody stab you with a St. Patrick day pin randomly to incorporate ghost notes as you hit the pads. Pull down your pants to your ankles and fill it with crumbled newspapers and set it on fire and zip it them back up.

TimeCorrect set to OFF. Then, I play the music.

Also, it's a good practice to record longer patterns if you can play. You may surprised how much more you'll swing around over a 24-bar pattern VS a 4-bar pattern.

try to PLAY what you HEAR in your head.. practice till u get it right.. if you cant "hear" it then it wont sound authentic no matter what kind of settings u put ur TC on

I use TC on some aspects around 50-53 swing,I turn it off to place my kicks,or layer a snare with quantize off and another layer with it on.I like to mix and match depending on the groove I`m seeking.

Alot of times I`m under the influence so quantize is a godsend for me. :-D

I found out people who use samples a lot have to turn the TC off....

I rarely use samples and I need a foundation that's not " imaginary " but real.

This is why commercial dance music sounds horrible when a band plays it. People are use to music that's in the pocket, bands are all over the place....

I experiment with diff timing adjustments when creating, but I rarely do things with timing off unless it's a synth part.

TC usually off and I just play it several times until it fits like I want it. Sometimes I will TC or noterepeat in the hats to set up the timing that i freestyle to... then once I get other elements in there, I go back and play overwrite the hats, playing them live

a lot of time, i play a rough pattern in with TC on, and then go back and re-play what i need to, with TC off

Check this out,http://scitation.aip.org/content/aip/magazine/physicstoday/article/65/7/10.1063/PT.3.1650
to me we all have our own inner timing, basically our heartbeat, the music we make or try to get hold of will always reflect that, one hint I will give is it's not the main beat that can create the swing, it can be the little bits in between. I really agree with ES-K it's mind over matter, you got to get what your hearing in your head out, and search for that "I got it moment".
