I'm surprised no one has mentioned pitch, attack or decay. At least I didn't see it. I could have missed it. When I am making a track, I don't look for anything to move a certain way. I usually start with the sample so if the sample sucks, chances are I won't be able to mold drums to it. I do each drum sound on a different track for drop purposes, or change ups. I always start with pitch so it matches whatever sample I have playing. Once I get a drum's pitch right, then I go to filters, attack and decay. These are good techniques if you want to make an open high hat get cut off by a snare. Or for making hi hats shorter or longer depending on the beat. You'd be surprised how much those basic tools help.

Great Video Clip so what did you learned as far as details of giving the drums funk?

What I see and hear for the Video clip from the highly skilled Hip Hop producer Lord Finesse.
1. The Break is chopped loose.
2. The Kick is layered with the shaker/tambourine glues everything together within the recorded drum sequence.
All other elements come from the ghost notes and the air between drum hits. Listen to the snare accents on during the 2nd bar. The ghost notes and Snare accents add dynamics to the beat...
3. The swing is in the Hat/Tambourine pattern..

Checkout drummers like Bernard Purdie, Clyde Stubblefield, and Zigaboo Modeliste for some funk.
Ghost notes... Bernard Purdie16th Ghost Notes. Peace!

I've mostly been using my analog rytm for my drums and my 2000xl for mainly sequencing my hardware synth. The analog rytm has microtiming. I love to nudge my kicks and snares around. I hope in the fire they will implement microtiming for the whole pattern. Be cool to make your hats just a hair sooner or later through the whole pattern.
