Having great drum sounds is over-rated. The key is to be a great drum programmer. I do have an extensive library of sick one-shots, but I also like making the hottest drum parts out of the worst drum sounds.
I do have an advantage, because i have played live drums for 15 years.

Practice with bad samples and become good at it. It's the best advice i can give anyone. Start off with 80's beat boxes and expand from there
