but yeah i hear u cy. sometimes u can drop a gem or 2 for the sake of helping

i always listen in stereo but sample in mono, somtimes u have to sample from the differing left and right,

i sample from turntable to system receiver (amp) to mpc. i listen to every record from beginning to end except for when i get impatient or got things to do.. then i start needle dropping like cyrus explained.

cyrus put down a very concise description of the process of listening for samples.

check out your local 70s radio station, website. Or call em up for thier play lists.

If u have a "standard" mixer and not a highend, (rane, A&H...) you could
just use an external riaa amp, even the cheapest one (about 30€),
should improve the quality some.
I'll have a numark em series w a kaoss pad, and it seem's like it auto-compress everything i put in. I belive a riaa-amp could as expensive as
your'e mpc if you shop around,. But! i got away w a cleaner sound with a
chinese made one bought here in sweden for 30€. (thats about the same
in dollars..) Then like someone pointed out, make sure to sample just below clip to make use of all bits your machine is ready for.

how about this one (maybe obvilous/obsoleete):
sample at 45 (assuming its a 33 rekkid) then slow it down on the mpc, by about -50. i mainly do this because im still rocking floppies (yeah i know its the 21st centry) so it smaller infromation size - but also does seems to make things a bit more grimy (i suppose its a lower bit rate or soemthing).
also, sample any record with people rocking afros and riding sea creatures on it

Personally I liked the cheap way.... DL'ing for Production purposes only..... Welcome to a post Pro-IP Act world.... Now the next cheapest way is to buy a song from I-Tunes for 0.99

or buy Dual RCA-1/4 cables to sample audio outputs.......
