Producers and Traditional Degree's

College is not that hard to get thru as long as you bring your @ss to class. I mean, we're not talking ivy league here, but these days, college diploma is like high school diploma, quite depressing for me. Well if these people can do it so can you. Class only takes up 4-5 hours a day, the rest you can do whatever. If you tryin to goto law school or med school after, you might not have too much free time, but to get a degre at state university or something, anybody can do it. The tuition loan is another story tho...

school opens up your mind and teaches you how to look at things in many different ways. i have a ba in economics from nyu. having options allows u to stay true to your music. i wouldnt be where i am today if it wasnt for dat paper.

Your crazy , it depends on the degree, i know in computer science or engineering u cant just bring your ass to class..... Your out your freakin mind man, i can tell ur not in the sciences talkin like that......

its def true over here- some of the cats i met at uni were totally uninspiring, they were also lazy, not particuarly bright and arrogant- many of them still passed despite not understanding fundamental course topics....most of them are not doing anything related to their interest, not getting the wage they should be commanding but are in shit loads of debt wth the government- Yup uni certainly aint the thing it used to be (or at least was made out to be)

again i see you don’t really know what Im talking about,U must be a freshman or softmore. Or in a realitivly easy major...

I meant the hard science majors like Electrical engineering, computer science ,physic’s mathematics, Chemistry etc…

I don’t mean the lil pre req bio, chem or math courses your taking to get into your major, anybody can pass that shit

Young Guru studied music engineering. So in addition to laying down cool beats, he's pretty knowledgeable in audio theory.

Diddy graduated from Howard (IIRC). How much production he actually does is another topic of debate.

Dr Dre went to the school of hard knocks. That is, learning and grinding just by being around it.

Peoples, education is THE most important thing you can do to better yourself, especially if you are poor/disadvantaged etc. etc.

I don't think a college degree is the end-all, and there are other ways to get ahead for example real estate license, computer certs, to name a few. As long as you keep trying to get ahead and do more with yourself, that's all you need to focus on. College does provide a foundation but some people go to college just to go to college, if you don't love your profession you'll be screwed anyway.

I believe college is important, but nowadays if you are smart and have the know how in the particular field you can still do something, but it will be harder for anyone to take you seriously without a degree. You just have to grind more and prove yourself more. Now I'm not saying you can go get a chemical engineering job just cuz you know something, but as far as music production, starting small businesses, hands on jobs, real estate etc, you can be very sucessful w/o a degree.

infact, I know someone who went to Purdue U. just got out 2 years ago with a chemical engineering degree and his school payments are more than my house payments and he only makes like $35k a year and lives in his moms house. He wants to quit and join my union job.

btw, I am starting recording engineering and pro tools classes at the community college next month.

Degrees only get you so far, its all about contacts. Your friend should prolly start networking with other chemical engineers. MY friend still hasn't finished his degree with chem engineering, and he makes about 60 a year, and has about five people under him... Three years ago, he got an internship there, and just started working there, neat thing is university is probably going to give credit for life experience, and he will get his degree..
Dude's in Hawaii right now, for a business trip, tell me that ain't the life... All he does is design batteries...

Contacts are key, in my personal situation I have been going for a communications degree, and after five years (due to work, and light schedules, still about a semester away...) Its funny, but through contacts, I am going for a job with a phone company as a tech.. And it starts at 1200-1500 a week... And a degree really is irrelevant, you have to pass their tests first (which are crazy, and if you fail you have to wait another 6 months to take the test again)... But degree or not they pay for your education afterwards...

True it has nothing to do with my degree, but in a way it deals with sound (there is a part of the tech test, just about sound waves and shit)
so I say why not, good pay, benefits, security, and still produce on the side, but not worry about not making it....

Main point is its about contacts... Everyone in the game today, are there because of contacts, talent gets you so far, but the contacts actually open the door...

this is absolutly right, not saying education beats out experience, but it's a whole lot easier to get in the door with a degree. the last job i was hired for, they made me bring a copy of my degree with me to the second interview.

i did not want to join this thread but after watching the nba draft last night there were dozens of high school and college basketball players that did not get drafted so, now what do they do now?

no education and job experences what do they do now?

go to the park and tell stories about what he use to do on the court.

with education you have something to fall back on. period.

i bet if you ask these players that did not get drafted if they wish they would have stayed in school i bet $100 that they would say yes.

Exaclty man, your dead on, education provides secruity. No matter what happens with this music shit, with my masters degree and job experince i know i wont be on the street. These days cats have short term goals. They act like they are gonna be 20 years old forever. They dont think about the future,(wife and kids) and how they are going to support them....Not everyone is gonna make it big time, and like you said, what do you do then???
