Quantegy is back in business as are a few other manufacturers of Analog tape in Europe, that was a marketing / restructuring move to clear their warehouses and shrink their operation to meet demand. PLease stop spreading that rumor (unless you're trying to buy a reel deck cheap )

So Wow, VHS is analog, that's pretty ill. It will only do 2 track right? or do pros have multitrack VHS for audio?

The guys I've seen use it seemed to think it was pretty idiot proof. I was just talking about this to MPC4000XL on Tuesday, might be a good alternative to just doing an internal bounce or mixing back into the computer,

There has to be easier and cheaper ways of getting these things locally, $300 for a VCR today seems kinda dumb. when dvd recorders come down these things will drop even moe on ebay.

Nooooo Disrespect to anyone on this post....but that my friends is nothing new at all.....that is very old school and has been done by many a producer coming up in the late 80s early 90s.....I'm 32...and when I was 19 we had a group and our producer did this because he said the quality was better than the then 4 track cassette recorders....he also used a guitar pedal sampler too for our "sampler". we had a very low budget set up but it got the job done.

25 here, so i just missed the late 80s technology, by just this much...
I was still messing with nintendo in them days..

If anything its a good thing to bring up, and discuss... During the late 80s early 90s analog tape was basically all cats messed with, during these times when digital is the mainstay, trying to look elsewhere for inspiration and sound potential...

Thanks though for pointing it out, just gives more depth to the history of hip-hop

But then again, I am trying to see the potential when used with todays equipment.. Its not a budget thing really, but it is in a way, if a cat can't afford a 4 track, and wants something to record to... Just another option..

I once had to do a mixtape for a art opening, and needed it to be as long as possible with no breaks.....so I did it on HiFi VHS. It sounds better than a cassette, and you can record hours at a time with no breaks.
BUT, VHS tapes have proven to deteriorate over time, more than cassettes in my experience.....so transfer to digital as soon as possible.

PS- I just bought a new VCR this week for $50. My old one was fuching up.

Thanks itchy, good looks with the experience POv... Vhs tape can turn to shit.. I have hundreds in the basement, various movies, and some have warped, gone off track, whatever... Good looks..

i remember mpc ripper using vcr for tape saturation, pm him i think he got that vcr recording on lock.

On the humble, i once read an article in RECORDING magazine...they had an article on recording on a shoe string budget. apparently, and i'm not sure if vhs can do it too -> beta machines with a sync/ it would be ill if anyone here knows what i'm talking about...i'd like to try it out

sorry i meant a converter, syncing would be wishful thinking i guess...don't recall what the model was, but it allows for better sigal conversion...

I would then record it to my masterlink @ 24/96

What if you just have an MPC, could you record your beat to the VHS using the MPC's record mode...then sample the VHS BACK into the MPC, save it as a wav, then send it to the pc?
