there is no "Video" part of the tape when you are recording audio only into it. Thus, all of the "data" being saved to the magnetic tape is audio, so you are able to get more "audio data" onto the tape, thus richer sound, more detail, etc.

?? The VCR is going to use the same space on the tape for audio whether there is video present or not. The recording head doesn't change size. Just because there is nothing in the video input doesn't mean it's not recording video... it's still recording video, just blank video (black screen).

I have to disagree with you there. Recording audio on VHS is nowhere close to using a 2" Studer.

i think if you use a higher model vcr (google panasonic ag models) you get to choose to record only audio and no video.

which is sick because a lot of these things on ebay have tracking issues...which doesn't effect audio...ehhe

that may be, but i'm sure on vhs you have an audio track, and a video track. unless you somehow manage to input the audio into the video recording head, i believe, even if you have one of these panasonic ag models switched to audio only, then it just records to the audio track. it just doesn't make sense to manufacture a vcr that can be used as a high quality analog audio recorder.

duly noted.

regardless, i'm pretty psyched about getting vhs to use as an effect. i'm totally biting tictoc's style on this one but hell, from what i've heard of his stuff, the effect is dope and hard to emulate otherwise.

plus, i bet i can do it better

yeah youre playin yourself if you think a vcr can compete wiht a 2" machine. its nowhere near close. vcrs are good for holdin up the cable box. watchin old porn tapes. also all the finals and playoff series ive taped. dont you notice the **** noise? it sucks even sampling vhs. get your heads out of your asses.

ITs not meant to compare to a 2" tape.

Its meant to a be an analog, better than a cassette tape, thats all.

OK....much better analog sound than a cassette tape.

On a scale from $2 Maxell to 2" Studer, its a lot closer to the Studer than it is to the Maxell.

It's dirty, no doubt, it's analog....that's the point. About 20X better sounding than a cheap cassette tape, that's for sure.

So....it's a good medium ground between expensive and crappy-sounding.

So, I rephrase: As good as a Studer? not by a mile. Close? Closer than a cassette tape, much closer.

Plenty of people master to a VHS tape. I do that with my drums. Some don't. To each their own.

TBonus, do you have anything to contribute to any thread...ever?

i just lost an ebay bid on a real sick panasonic. tictoc, does your vcr let you observe how loud the signal is? so you know how much you're clipping by?

ie, one of those old little moniter dials...words escape me for the moment to remember what is.

?? WTF?? Yeah i contribute... I drop knowledge on here all the time, and I straighten out confused folks who think that VHS sounds close to Studer 2".... sorry I hurt your feelings, I just disagreed with your comment, that's all... Don't be so touchy.
