I'm loving my ESX these days. The efx and knobs make it so easy to tweak the hell out of your original sample. I'm really appreciating that box more and more. My good friend who has been drumming for like 18 years came by last weekend and I set him up with a nice old school jazz kit on my MPC and I threw some crazy ass bass lines and organ sounds on the ESX. Damn that sh*t was fun. hypnotizing. I wish we would have recorded it.

you know.... J Dilla seemed to be a great Producer heard around the world.The Problem that bugs me is People worship deadman gone to the extreme.....Example, 1.Elvis 2.Scareface 3.Babe Ruth 4. John Lennon 5. Tupac etc. Yes.. I agree with you guys on the talent and Legacy these guys left,but You have studio gear to (mpc's) produce better tracks than any of these cats and more...Why?...... Because of I.N.F.O.R.M.A.T.I.O.N,

Knowledge is definitely important, but don't rule out other things like muscianship, individuality, creativity, passion...could go on and on. The flip side of the argument you're making is a lot of people do have studio gear, and they are NOT making better tracks than guys like Dilla or Premier or whoever. I'm not one to hero worship anyone in particular, but having a bass and being on a bass forum where a lot of knowledge is exchanged isn't going to make me into Charlie Mingus. Guys like Dilla (or Mingus from my example) have one thing in common, they live their music. It's sun up to sun down.

Anyway, not really disagreeing with you really...just offering some more food for thought.

the last/current issue of future music mag, really revealed some of his tips.


1 - most of his beats were never really quantized
2 - sometimes he wouldn't compress his drums
3 - the environments he recorded in
4 - he really did have a lot of drum breaks to begin with, so once you're set with that, you can never go wrong as a music maker

charlie mingus is the man...i came across a few of his records in my bassment, and they disappeared when i reorganized everything. i still havent found them....
