Swing settings - Correct swing settings

most cats i know that use the swing do it for neo soul stuff. almost gives it a live lazy type vibe. ya know when the hi hat or kick or bass line needs to drag or come early just a tad.[/color]

Hi all,

I'm new to the XL and was wondering about swing.  Does the swing setting affect all tracks in a seq or can you set it per track?

Cheers 180.  I have bben trying to set swing per track but can't seem to get it to work.  This is what I am doing on my XL, is this wrong?

1. From Main Window, on say Track 1,  I highlight timing and Open Window.  Then adjust Swing settings.

2. Go back to main and go to to track 2.  Open window, and can see the Swing settings I set for track 1.  

If I adjust these and go back to Main, Select Track 1 and go to timing, they have changed as well to the Track 2 settings.

Must be something simple but I can't get it?

Any help would be appreciated,

Yo Geoff, you have everything down. You didn't mention if you are pressing the "DO IT" button though. After you press do it, the swing settings will stay set for that track regardless. If you use different swing settings for another track and go back, the settings will look different but your original settings will be in place. Pressing "DO IT" overides a track's swing settings. I know, it's very misleading. Now if you change the timing...I think that one can change. I'm not sure about the timing...Can anybody answer that?[/color]

yall just now found out about swing? no hatin from me though, cause there's probably stuff i don't know yet that u guys have known 4 a while. u should try swing. its one of the tightest features on the mpc.[/color]

geoff.....i really couldn't instruct anyone on the swing features. i've only played with it a lil' 'myself. some of my counterparts use it more. i need to actually spend time on dummy seq. and tracks and see what happens. maybe i'll understand it a lil more than tryin' to read the explanation in a manual.[/color]

In respnse to Hoaxone I think. Can't you just place beats exactly where you want them using step edit? I'm not sure exactly what swing does, so I'm wondering if this is the purpose for it. The way I record is:

1. Make beat (manually)
2. Tighten up beat in step later (move snare ahead, move kick back, etc.)

Does swing do something different?[/color]

This is a great point! I believe you're right. If step edit alows you to move stuff foward/backwards then I need to learn that method. I don't know how to use step edit. Everything I make is by ear. I use the swing & earlier/later functions a lot to tighten/loosen my programming. Can anybody here elaborate on the step edit approach? Is it a relatively fast editing method that will allow me to stay in the groove of my beat?[/color]

Really?! You never used step before? It's reeaal easy dog. Here check it out:

1. Compose beat

2. Usually (depending on your rhythym) a snare or a bass or some sound will be just a liiitttle too ahead or behind. You can tell because when you listen to the beat a few times, It sounds like it's being "tugged" around. In order to (fairly) quickly correct this, listen to the beat and watch the time roll by as you listen. Let's say there's a snare thats rubbin up on the next drum and just sounds too early, make note of what bar, and what measure it was close to.

3. Go into the step menu. Now you should use the cursor arrows to highlight both the bar and measure you thought you heard the snare in- example 1:03:00. So you know your snare is somewhere in the first bar and the third measure. Now highlight the last field (samples, or ticks) which is the 00's in my example. Slowly jog the data wheel through the ticks until you hear your drum. You will then see the drum represented by the number pad it's on.

4. Now that you see your snare that's too fast, highlight it. now hit copy. After you copy it, delete it. Now simply jog back about 3 clicks (always varies) and hit paste.

5. After your snare shows up, press play from start and listen. If it sounds right now, keep it. If it's still to fast, repeat copy/delete/paste step, and try until it sounds right.

Step is really useful for this reason. It's also really useful for making single adjustments quickly. From this screen you can copy, paste, adjust velocity, change the drum to something else, or even compose a whole beat (tedious) in it.

I'm trippin'. I've used this feature before while trying out one of the tutorials on this site. I never made the connection that I can use the step edit feature for other stuff, duhh. Thanks for catchin' that Mass. Now I can have even more control of my programming![/color]

only one thing..if I set the for example the kick to 63% and dom't like it how do I undo it?

In the main screen, highlight the Timing & press Open Window.  

U can only change Swing if you have 1/16 or 1/8 selected.
