these underground heads are movin units but jumpin to a major even just to have major distribution is a very good thing. Ur not sellin out ur gettin your music actually heard by alot of people instead of just nerds and backpackers on message boards talkin bout how real they are cause they buy it and they support tru school and all that. All the major hip hop cats in the early 90s would have major distrubtion but own there own publishinig. Stones throw is movin units, but dont u think that alot more peeps would be exposed to that music if BMI was distrubiting it? I think its just retarded to say that is wack and to stay off a major to earn "respect" or whatever. Pete Rock lost repect casue he was on Elecktra? Cmon now. It aint sellin out. Sellin out is when u have no control over ur music or u are just motivated to make money and could give a fu** bout the art.
theres more to the music biz then these deals that peeps talk about like the chingy and lil jon type operations. But if u own a label and get distribution u can get ur "realness" out to a bigger audience. Not truschool cats keepin it real and keepin it broke.

Matiks, you can't teach the code, or real passion, you're born with it. That's why your age don't come into this thread.

I would finish your posting right now, coz you're just gonna get more s@*t, you're wasting your time with these cats homie!!

If you are getting $5 an album sale, and sell 20,000, then sign with a major distribution, and get $2.00 an album, you'd need to sell 50,000 to make what you were making before. If you're stuff is niche stuff and doesn't have the marketing backing that the major's get, that's a hell of a gamble.

Nobody on the Major's make 8 Bucks an album... 50 Cent after he's done payin royalties and the producer's and big wigs at the studio's and the advance the studio gave him... He makes about 10 cents an album... He makes all his money on endorsements and touring...

Why do you think Jay-Z is soo rich... Album sales and exposure only gave him a backing to know that he would have sure fire sales in anything else he did... Which is why there is a Roc-A-Fella brand everything that he gets his money from... As well as owning a portion of his company... This is rare in the mainstream...

I know ctas like Percee P and Chief Kamachi... I've talked to them about this... They make a fairly decent living from just hustlin their CDs on the corners and in front of stores and after shows... They're makin 7 bucks a CD so they only have to sell a portion of what 50 sells to make the same kind of money... It's basic math man...

Plus all thos cats like 50 that you see on MTV cribs... That house is rented and paid for by their advance... That jewelry they wear... Based on an account they set up with Jacob's.... Those cars... Rentals (maybe one of them is actually owned)...

They got money tied up in so many things that if their record don't sell and they don't endorse a sh*tload of products they'll have to rely on welfare checks if they don't play their cards right... Most of what they have is an illusino that their labels paid for so that the masses buy into their sh*t...

Nobody makes 8 bucks an album... So get your facts straight...

matt theres a diff from signing an artist deal and a distrubition. What ur talkin about is correct. Now if u have ur own label and publishing like i stated before nationwide distribution with someone bigger then fatbeats distribution or the other smaller chains. the deal that u are talkin bout is diff then what im tryin to tell u. Goin to a major DISTRIBUTOR not label is how u get paid. A label will rob u and exploit u everywhich way then say they own the rights. Record producers sign diff contracts with labels anyways. They usally get paid up front. And when u own ur own publishing rights and ur own label that pie gets bigger.

Yea but think of the chances of you gettin an actual distribution deal... Everybody wants you to sign wit a label... The chances of you gettin a good distribution deal are slim to none... More likely you'll get a deal with a label who wants to rape you eveyr which way they can...

I'll take my chances in the underground where I can make my music and be in control of my own music...

Last I checked Fat Beats was the largest independant distributer, also the average deal with the majors nets you about $0.90 an album sold. It used to be higher, around $1.30 an album, but the used the filesharing hype to cut it and some cats fell for it.

Major distro is nothing without promotion, the indi distributers go to stores where people go to get different stuff, so the promotion has a foundation, any further promotion helps, like Stone's Throw placing ads in magazines for Jaylib and Madvillain. but you just send that shit to wallmarts across the nation, it doesn't help you get sales without some hardcore promotion. An album like that won't really play in Kansas.

And right now, Def Jux and MF Doom gets more play across the world than 50 Cent... It's a fact...

No it's NOT a fact! I don't know whether you heard this from someone or just made it up yourself, but it's total bullsh*t!

Now don't get me wrong, I love Doom but ain't NO WAY that he gets more play than 50 cent, ever. I just heard 50 on the radio. I just saw him on the tv. I just saw his name on the tabloids. Everyone knows who he is and what he looks like, but if I went and asked the next person about Doom they wouldn't know sh*t. 50's albums sell tens of thousands copies while Doom's albums might sell a few hundred.

Murs and all these cats do twelve month tours in Japan and Australia... Last time I checked 50 ain't been doin that too much...

I don't know who tours the most, but I do know that Murs and all these cats have never been here and Fifty was here just two weeks ago. And while Murs is rocking the clubs 50 is doing it in the arenas..
I got nothing against Murs, in fact I would want to see him live over 50 anyday, besides a club is a much nicer place to go to than a hockey arena. All I'm saying is that while Murs may be popular in Europe or anywhere else in the world, he can never reach the audiences that Fifty has.

No offense but get your facts straight

Peace-

for real cheech. thats why the underground is nerdy to me anymore. Cats are so gassed by these dudes that they dont want to hear or beileive the truth. Yuo got all these groupies that are reppin underground, but they dont see that its just as corny as the majors. For real name a classic album that came out in the last five years. Indie or commerical, u probally cant casue music has gotten so disposible. The underground, i feel is too trendy in the sense of the "keepin real" and truschool ish. Alot of the indie cats are feelin themselves too much. the commerical cats are all about gettin paid and writing chick songs/club songs and following forumlas that make big money. No one has put out anything that i think cats will bump ten years down the road like the way we bump pete rock or wu tang or big or tupac . U got alot the purisits on the one side sayin what needs to be done and how to do it, then we got the dudes that have no regards for the art and just want to make hot beats to sell like kanye. hip hop can suckadick anymore im so sick of it.
