I think it's more important to understand what an EQ and compressor exactly does. Get familiar with it what kind of influence it has on drumsounds when u run it through an eq and compressor before sampling right into the mpc.
Or of course eq and compress in the mixdown.

Ok on the pads for your snare layer the same snare sound twice, pitch one up or down 2 steps and then lower the volume to around 90... it'll thicken ur snare and give it some real power.

Like mans said before its all about layering on the mpc, all one shot drum sounds i use are a combo of 2 or three drum sounds so you can almost pick out frequencies..... again theres no right or wrong way of doin this, just a good or bad sound n for that u got to trust ur ears. If you listen to music all the time, trust ur ears cos they know what they doin.
