Obviously there are 2 mindsets going on here.
1. People like to know what others are using.
2. People are content with whatever they have and don't care.

On the 1. side, those people might be more into collecting gear.
On the 2. side of things, those people might just want to stick with what they got and learn that, possibly adding gear later on but not much cause it might muck up their production flow (from what i've been readin lately it seems like mpc, vinyl, turntable PERIOD, haha).

Me, I'd have to say I'm the 2. side. I have VERY few toys but I'm content.
I'm not a hardware type except for my actual music creation (mpc triton asr) everything else is pc which might get me flamed by hardcore hardware cats but that's cool. To each his own.

I'm not a gear whore at all but I understand it. I got 1 friend who used to be the worst gear whore I knew, everything new that came out he had to get it. And after the NEW gear effects wore off he go, trade it in and get something else. I don't know what it is about that but he was a gear whore or whatever else u wanna call it.

All I got to say is that there are plenty off gear whores who make music all of the time. I think the school of thought generally is that if you are too into gear, you can't possibly make music. Most studios do not just have an MPC and vinyl. However, if your gear lust is getting in the way of making music...then it is a problem. It doesn't get in the way for me.

Gear Whore Book coming soon:

You were not born with this knowlegde. True, the focus should be on making music...and not collecting machines. There are people that say things like "man, once I cop this machine...I'm gonna make the dopest beats"...and then the buy it and sell it and the cycle starts over...and never make a beat. That sucks. However, as long as you are making music...I see nothing wrong with knowing what tools are out there and who uses them. The stuff I use isn't the norm in hip-hip...but I still use it cause it works for me.

we already know what is out there. U mostly hear about the same gear. it isn't rocket science. and i am being honest i dont care what the next man uses. i base my gear purchases on trying out equipment whether it is used by a hip hop producer or not. my point is that if u took away what these guys currently use and gave them something else u would still get heat from them. be your own man and use your brain a little more instead of gear. i am not a slave 2 gear, gear is a slave to me.

Why are you dissin me? Have you ever heard my music? You are assuming I don't know **** because I'm into gear? New gear comes out all the time and some of it is worth knowing about. If you are ok with your set-up that is cool...but I'm still into adding pieces. Why is that wrong to some? I can make beats with a computer, with an MPC, with any synth / drum machine and with regular instruments. I don't get it why people look down on someone for being in to equipment and talking about it. I am my own man more than most people I know. I try to make my music different...not the same old cookie cutter beats you hear all over. I'm not saying I always suceed...but I try.

i am not dissing u. how could i diss anyone here i know none of u. i am a gearslut, however i take the time to learn all of my tools. i do not base my purchases on if a cool producer is using it. half of these cats sample anyway. the main tool that they r using is someone elses ideas not a mpc or any other sampler. that is what they then use to reimagine someone elses ideas. so if one wants to get the madlib sound u would have a better chance doing it by obtaining the records in his collection than buying the sampler that he uses.
u guys also have to understand how endorsements work. any company will give u a product free if u will:
a. be on tv performing with it
b. shoot it for a record cover or in an interview
c. shout it out in print or on tv as being your secret weapon.

believe me i know and have gotten a fewfreebies that way.

so take what people say with a grain of salt

Alright...I agree, you have to learn your gear...not just look good with it in a photo.

Madlib i no master drummer, but he plays the drums for his music, and it's a cool thing, nothing wrng with a loose jam.

I actually belong to both of Lampdog's Mindsets.

I love learning about gear that other artists use, but I have never bought anything based on what another artist uses. I don;t chase a sound of another, which is what getting their gear would attempt to achieve, because I am a different person and it all comes down to how you like to work. I like to hear what people are using because it is a window into their process and it's col to hear about people working differently than you.
I love the gear for what I can do with it, not what so and o did with it.

I am very content with what I have, and dont like the constant upgrade path of modern machines and techniques, but I understand them and get into their features and how they do things out of my interest in equipment. I don't need to own it all.

I never bought anything based on an artists either... I make beats...and look at my gear below. I never see either the Mono or Machinedrum show up in Scratch magazine or whatever.

classic wrote:whatever... i THINK thats b.s... its cool for madlb casue it suits his style of music but aint nobody gonna tell me what i need to make beats.

Im tired of cats thinking hip hop has to sound one way(cloudy underground b.s) or has to be made a certain way...

Thats why i dont like that cat in the first place, secondly his beats are wack

bring it on..

class.

hahahaha his beats are wack..hahaha... go play with your claps .. madlib has made all types of different sounding sh*t from club to raw underground sh*t to raggae.. i laugh at u.

By elmacaco Sun Nov 13, 2005 11:30 pm
The underground is underground because it doesn;t sound like the mainstream sameness and is harder for people to accept. not saying it's better or worse.

I see a lot of people dissing imaginary madlib fans/backpakers/emo rap listeners by pinning stuff on them that they never said, just playing on stereotypical ideas of what a madlib fan is.

I personally have not seen these people on the forums, so can we vent our rage at the people who actually express the opinion we disagree with? Instead of pinning stuff that people never said because they like madlib or whatever?

I personally don;t think someone's wack if they don't like madlib, it's just music, not a popularity contest.

Should be a dope book. I tend to make more music when I am excited about my gear. I used Reason only for 3 CDs straight... I needed a change...so now I'm getting back into hardware. I came here because I will be picking up an MPC1000 in December. The Elektron stuff got me hooked on hardware.

He quoted me...that's why I reacted that way. I'm chill now.

I am not trying to tell people what to do but if u only buy gear with money that has been earned from your production
1. u will be more motivated to address the business end of it
2. that gear will actually serve a purpose

i made that choice 3 years ago and it has worked to my benefit
