i just listen to a wide variety of rap and hiphop and when something stands out to me i try to recreate the pattern to see what i can come up with.. premo, large professor, necro, true master, stoupe, rza.. etc etc

the patterns usually all sounds similar but there are usually subtle differances in patterns that make all the differance.. as well as focus on samples, like i find some of rza's tracks are all about hi hats, and the kick is nowhere to be heard...
its cool to try out

That will give you the VERY basic timing to at least nod your head to, and (90% of the time) those notes will stay there and you'll just add more.

BTW I noticed that a couple cats have drumbeats that you "usually use". Is there a benefit to doing that? I try to not use the same drum beats from song to song, as much as thats possible. Like FistFull said, I try to make my drums fit the song's mood/melodies. I never thought to use the same basic structures from song to song.

yeah thats true.

the thing is that you might have the same exact pattern for all your songs, but because they have differant groove and swing and instrumentation, its not the same.

Most hiphop beats employ a kick on the downbeat adn a snare on the up beat. But its more of the groove that separates them

I agree with lampdog. Unless you get the exact ticks, you arent gonna have the same groove, thus not having the same pattern.
