Discuss the various methods you use in music production, from compressor settings to equipment type.

ea flow just asked about both mixing and mastering on your own. i gave him some insight. i know where and when multiband compression is used. i am sure he doesnt care what the topic is or that i responded. the guys on the site you mentioned might be pros with millions of dollars worth of equipment and might have the same attitude towards diy that you have. the people on the sites i mentioned are way more helpful for people wanting to try to learn this stuff on their own. ea flow can decide who is off base on that one. it sounds to me like you just want to discourage people from trying to learn and make their mixes better (mix with your ears not your eyes, etc). you realize if someone doesnt tell peeps to make a place in the stereo mix and with eq for each sound, their ears will never figure it out for them and their stuff will always be way muddier than it needs to be. i never said they should mix with their eyes, i pointed someone that was askin to some info they can read, then try out and use their ears to guide them. besides hypocrite, what good would your site do if you cant learn any of this stuff with your eyes either?

I think that you're only reading what you wanna read off of my posts, boss.

You didn't answer my questions either, Mr. Martin.

I know how he did it, but I ain't him so I guess its not my place to talk.

here's an EQ question freq, say I have a drum sound, and its made by layering the low end of a 909 kick the mid of a short 808 bump and a high filtered drum sample, ok, now I got a real deep bass sound for the bassline how do I eq it so they "blend"?

I try cutting the low end from the drum, but that ruins the sound for the kick I was going for?
help me out freq!!!!!

thats what a mixing board is for, eq the channels before mastering or tracking. IMO the 2000xl's mixer is shit but you could give it a try there too, on a 3000 or 60 you could pull it of running out a mono signal.

you can run a mono signal out a mpc 2000xl with the 8 outs!

dr foo,
cut room out of the bass sound for the kick with eq. you can use a parametric eq to find the frequencies you need for the kick by setting it to a high gain and 'scrolling' the frequency knob until the part of the kick that really defines it starts to really jump out at you. make note of what frequency that was and set that eq's gain back to 0, now simply notch that frequency out of the bass track using a parametric by setting it to the same frequency and lowering it's gain. experiment with the gain and the Q (width) until you find the right mix of notching the bass where you clean up some of the mud and still have enough of the bass. also you are probably going to want to rolloff everything below 30 (well 20-30) on any low frequency channels as this just makes for mud. unless your sound really goes subsonic you dont need those frequencies usually. also you need to be mixing on some nearfield monitors to really hear when you get it right.

to freq, i was being sarcastic i am not george martin any more than you are snoop's personal engineer. knowing a name doesnt prove shiet.

what is this?....bickering is not gonna prove anything...as long as the man gets his answer is all that counts....thaz what we come here for...to share knowledge and learn stuff.....and no matter what level you are on...you can learn from others....i have not always agreed with brainwash but if he is willing to help someone itz all good....and freq the question was to you most likely because you are the "pro"....but ppl who came here are willing to get the info anywhere they can get it....just like advice or tips.....ppl take it anywhere they can get it but when someone says they are a "pro" ppl are gonna get at them for tips...............but hey i guess since this makes you guys feel good keep it going

Come on man, I know that. But, if you're in a room with some dudes having a conversation and someone specifically asks you a question, and some other dude jumps in and tries to answer it (by tryin to prove that he knows something, no less) everybody else wants to kick his behind. I'm sorry for carryin on with this, but this dude really pissed me off with the childish name callin' and illogical reasoning. If we were face to face, I would've shut this down a long time ago. Feel me? Anybody that knows me will tell you that I have very, very low tolerance and a short fuse for cats like him. Situations like this bring out the ghetto in me. I have a hard time ignoring it. Working on that part. Sorry again.

p.s. What dude said isn't even a "tip". You can read any studio related book, magazine, or at least 50 other posts on this forum to get that same info. I thought Foo was lookin for something a little deeper than COMMON KNOWLEDGE by asking me, and that's what he got via PM.

Brainwash was just trying to help, and he did help everyone else who read and appreciated his post. I think that's a hot tip, whether it is for newbies or not.
Ooooh, tips via PM, wow, you don't want to loose your edge by giving all those hard lessons of experience away to everyone on the board, oh no!
If it needs that kind of protection, then what you have is not really skill, but secrets.
Don't just dis someone trying to help to claim some kind of ultimate authority. Just because you know the traditional rules doesn't mean you know best.
You seem all right, but it seems like you are here just to be a big fish in a little pond, and that helps no one.
And why so bitter? Snoop do your girl in one of his porn videos or something ;)
