it is what it is, why try to break it down catagorize it or try to find meaning behind it. do you, once you master yourself then everything else will fall into place.

his shit is to ill, i mean i listen to it. Its not only the chopping technique but you honnestly gotta have a good ear and a **** up beat imagination...but its deff not diggin skills cuz this guy chopped up anything and it would sound awesome.

i'm not gonna get all into this thread... i just wanted to mention that his Donuts album is always in my deck. it's much "rawer" than the Shining. i like both of them. what i will mention though is that his drums sounds so damn real & his chops are on point. if anything, i will try to make my drums swing like his. i listen to his shit just for inspiration to do ME.

what i will agree on something someone just said... just snatch what you like & replay it how you like. that's what i do. and i'm a newbie. hope that helps.

Yeah. To see what J.Daniels is talking about here you people should listen to the Donuts album many times, and then listen to all the original songs he chopped up. Then you will hear how he used chops from all over the song and makes it sound like its supposed to be the way he made it. Some of the songs on donuts sounds like a regular song, or just loops, but its tiny chops from all over the place, and it sound natural. And he don't use many whole bars after eachother, that is MANY chops right there... It must have taken a long time to make some of those tracks, and it woult take me a long time to duplicate some of those tracks.

When I heard the original songs he used for Donuts I was like and and then in the end like "I need to step my chopping game up, I'm not sick with it, I'm just average like anybody else"...

He has said in some interviews that he likes to sample well known samples that everybody and their grandma has used, but he takes different parts of the sample than any other beatmaker has (or ever would) and flips it totally different. Like he plays a game on other beatmakers, teasing them. Using well known samples will make everybody who has heard the original sample understand how crazy and different the things he did was, how it was different.

But sometimes Dilla just looped a sample as well, sometimes even straight 4 bar loops with drums on it, nothing special, and that is no special chopping technique.

I have heard most of the originals on various mixtapes (DJ Rev. Shines: "Today's good news" and other mixes), and some from a friend of mine who recently got this 7" with just donuts originals. So I dont know any of the names.

But I'm sure someone else does!
